How many times did the romanian forces, part of the international coalition, engaged the enemy in Afganistan or Iraq ?
Whe know very little, the only engaments whe now are those in which, unfortunately, romanian soldiers lost theyr lifes. At the first glance, it would seem that romanians where rarely been cought in action, but at some interviews whith troops from there, it has been suggested by them that clashes between romanian forces and insurgents occured at more than some occasions.

It would be interesting to know more about this clashes, to see how the romanian troops where able to respond to such an aggresion (as farr as i understood, romanian responses where rather ammo waste then real figthing... sad.gif ) , eventually try to estimate aproximattely how many kills the troops scored against the insurgents...

Three Italian soldiers and one Romanian were killed on Thursday when an explosive device ripped through their convoy in southern Iraq, the Italian defense ministry said.

"Militar român, mort în Afganistan
Autor: BBC Romania.

For Cutezatorul - as you can see, there can hardly be any engagements, scores or ammo wastes after one of those biggies. It's all over in a couple of seconds.

Thanks Iamandi, I didnt hear about it before I read your post.

take care

Impressive photos. The wreck is still burning (or is it something else in the background?). Anyhow, poor guys...
What's the source?

I scare myself how is escaping a burning vehicle.
In fact, how can a modern APC become a firetrap after hiting a roadmine?
WW II tanks hit mines and did not burst in flames.
This picture should trouble our armour designers a lot sad.gif

No. That was not a MAT (mina antitanc), but a more powerfull explosive trap.

that APC was design to resist smaller calliber projectiles and Antipersonal mines.
In order to resist that kind of explosion you will need something bigger than a tank.

watching those wrecks makes me want to agree with 120mm more and more.
it would be nice to convert our remaining T-54/55, TR-580 and TR-85 to an Azcharit-type troop carrier and arm it with an OWS-25R turret. The scary thing about the BTR-80 is that even 14.5mm projectiles can penetrate the front of the vehicle.. I heard that serb snipers used m93 black arrow (.50 cal) effectively against croatian btr-60

off-topic: I read an article that said afghans greeted our troops by calling them "Gorby" (gorbachev?). Apparently the locals thought our troops were russian because of the our Zimbru BTR-80

B-33 Zimbru is supposelly a Romanian redesign of BTR -70. BTR-80 has full size side dors. B33 sa only a lower hatch.
I thin it is designed to resist to 12,7mm fires in frontal arch, but I am not sure.

Azcharit-type is a nice ideea. Problem is the deployment of it .

maybe I'm way over my head on this one but why didn't they try to bring over a couple of MLI-84's? in theory a C-130 hercules can load one and several troops. but I wonder how much difference it would have made... a simple RKG-3 grenade (which is popular among taliban) is OVERKILL for a BMP-1 hull. but at least it's safer than BTR-70. anyway, it was a mistake imo to try to prove the world that we can air lift our own troops with our lone C-130 hercules. had we asked some assistance we could've probably brought several MLI's over there. especially now that things are becoming more and more intense in afghanistan. check out this video of canadians/northern alliance battling taliban a few weeks ago.

I believe the MLI-84 wouldn't be a very good mine resistant vehicle. It has tracks, and a flat bottom, which would concentrate the explosive force, causing more damage than even the BTR. I would suggest converting a 6x6 or 8x8 truck into a mine-resistant vehicle, instead. The South Africans have some really good mine-resistant trucks. Really, the Zimbru isn't a bad start, but it needs work.

The problem is configuring your forces for the changing face of the fight. And the point about the Afghans calling Romanian troops "Gorby" is something I hadn't even considered.
