Hello,
I have just started learning Romanian, and was wondering if anyone can recommend any books on the history of the Romanian army 1877-1945 that are worth reading. I would be particularly interested in knowing about any good memoirs, general military histories of Romania and books about uniforms and equipment etc. As yet I know very little about the subject, I have read Mark Axworthy's little Osprey and have his longer book on order from the library, but I would like to find some things in Romanian to help improve my vocabulary etc. Could anyone recommend good book shops etc. that I might be able to buy Romanian books from, and which would send them to the U.K.? Thanks a lot! |

You can start with the bibliography list on the website:
http://www.worldwar2.ro/bibliografie/?language=en There are many that are worth reading, but not many are available to order. For the 1877 Independence War, I can recommend the excellent monography of Cornel Scafes, Ioan Scafes and Horia Serbanescu Armata Romana 1877-78, published by Sigma a couple of years ago. |

Tudor "Jurnalul Locotenentului Dobran" I. Dobran "Pumnul Tarii" D. Stoian "Cavalerii bimotoarelor de atac" (but I think it is too complicated for someone who is just learning the language) C. Marandiuc "Romanian Aeronautical Constructions" - D. Antoniu, G. Cicos "Singurul pe cerul Stalingradului" I. Profir "Incredibile intamplari aeriene" C. Iordache "Pe tarmul Nord-Pontic, 17 iulie 1941 - 4 iulie 1942" P. Otu, .... And ofcourse I recommend "Istoria Romanilor" in VII volumes issued by Academia Romana. |

Hello,
Thanks for your help! I'll keep the list for reference. I was just wondering, which of the books you listed are the most interesting to read? Which are well written? I know that when I have started reading about other periods and armies, some books I found were well written but some writers seem to make whatever they write about rather dull. I have been thinking, perhaps I will have to come to visit Romania to find good books on Romanian military history. Can anyone recommend good bookshops in Bucharest or other big cities that have good ranges of Military titles/good second hand bookshops? Thanks a lot |

Depending what you are looking for. Me for example I am looking for correct data but also for personal feelings/experiences, the list I gave includes both. As for locations, I could recommend Modelism shop, Military Museum shop, Carturesti book store, second hand book sellers that you find at Universitate, Romana, Obor... |

Well, it is worth reading as an entertainment. It is not very accurate and has some dramatism in it, but I also found out about events I did not know about. As I understand the writer was a Serviciu Informatii Oficer attached to ARR during ww2, also he was a pilot before. He had knowledge about many events so he decided to write about some of them. The book basically presents chronologically certain events in romanian aviation history (not too many - and as I said a little too dramatised). I bought it from Modelism. Let me know if you want me to buy one copy for you, it is really cheap (100k).

There is also the Noi bookstore near Intercontinental Hotel (Universitatii Square), which has also an old books section where you might find from time to time something of interest. |

Unfortuntely no. I have been looking for it for a long while, but the best chances of finding it are in old books stores.
