The price is huge indeed (I'd say even by western standards)

Yes, the price is huge for such a book. However, this is the hard-cover edition. A much cheaper soft-cover edition usually follows.
It should be an interestic book, based on the author's reputation. I don't quite understand, though, why a book on Antonescu and Rumania has to be linked in the main title with Hitler's name, without actually mentioning the main topic. Perhaps an editorial gimmick to attract more buyers to this lesser known topic? Gen. Dénes This post has been edited by Dénes on April 25, 2006 03:07 pm |

Indeed, it depends on the book. But this isn't Harrison's principles of internal medicine. I wonder how many copies they will sell, because this isn't really a hugely popular subject.

I've bought $100 books (even more expensive), but those were rarities. As for myself, I'll wait for the soft-cover edition. Gen. Dénes |

I think this price reflects more a "puplishers price policy"
Look at http://www.palgrave-usa.com/ and search for "History" You will see that almost ALL books have this range of prices ... Expensive books, for reach people ?! This post has been edited by MaxFax on April 28, 2006 05:35 pm |

Lots of books about WWII that come out in the UK have Hitler in the title, if the publisher can find a way to get it in. I always get annoyed when I go into the bookshops here, because if you go to look at the European History section, you will generally find about 40 different books with either the word Hitler or Nazis in the title, only one or two other books about any other aspect of German history and nothing on lots of the smaller European Countries at all. Even a recent academic study of the Italian Army in WWII had the title, 'Hitler's Italian Allies', (which annoyed me again) and a one about the Slovak army, 'Hitler's Slavic Wedge' etc. I think it is just to try and sell books, though I don't know if it works that well. I am very sick of it, and reached Nazi/ Fuhrer/SS saturation point a while ago. Another problem here is that a majority of the bookshops belong to one giant company, because it has bought all the other firms. This means you tend to get the same narrow range of titles in every shop. Many academic books, like the Deletant one, are very expensive to buy, because they print a very small number, and aim mainly to sell to universities, libraries and other institutions. Lots of these titles cost 120 Eu or more...but sometimes a paperback comes out that is about 30 Eu. Perhaps if Dr. Deletant's book is good a Romanian translation will be made? |

1. True enough, I've bought my copy of Milius' book for USD 75 and now I have seen it on Amazon for USD 488. But it is a rarity indeed. 2. Does anyone know about an electronic version of the book ? One that is available for pay and download ? All the best to all, Al |

Personally, I wouldn't trust any translations, as they could be poorly done, distorting the original message, or could omit certain passages for various reasons. Therefore, if possible, I prefer to read the originals, even if they are more expensive. Gen. Dénes P.S. Regarding the rest of your message, saudadesdefrancesinhas, I think you're right on spot. |

That's the key point. The price is high because they consider this to be an obscure topic, of interest only to specialists. The sales will be to libraries and universities, not average readers. There will be one printing (in hardcover), and they need to make their money while they can. |

Are you sure about this, Jeff? Usually, a soft cover print follows the hard cover one. Gen. Dénes |

Hi Guys,
The author is a distinguished British university academic, possibly the most knowledgeable on Romania in the UK. He is the author of several books on teaching the Romanian language over the last twenty or thirty years, so he is more than qualified to pick up even the subtlest linguistic nuances in Romanian archives. I therefore think that this book is likely to be one of the most important to be published on Romania in WWII in the English-speaking world. The price is high but, as "saudades......" posted, this tends to be the case with university-level publications, because they are not usually aimed at a popular market and so have small print runs. The pedigree of this book is very promising. The author is well positioned to produce good work. I will therefore be buying a copy. Cheers, Sid. |

O.K., Sid. You convinced me.
I just placed the order with Amazon's Canadian subsidiary, where they offer a 34% pre-publication discount (plus free shipping). The book will be shipped on Aug. 11. I am very curious to see how does it compare with Mark Axworthy's reference book on the Rumanian Army. Gen. Dénes P.S. Interestingly, besides the Rumanian, Mr. Deletant appears to be an expert in the Swahili language as well. This post has been edited by Dénes on May 04, 2006 02:35 pm |
