Check out this link: Armata Romana si SRI au vrut sa ocupe pe sest Insula Serpilor

A short summary for non-romanian speaking members: Apparently, around 1999-2001 there was a plan to capture the Snake Island by Romanian commandos. The island was defended at that time by 155 men, of which only 30 were really soldiers. The Romanian planners expected that the Ukrainians would be unable to react agresively once the fait accompli. However, Russian and Ukrainian secret services learned about this and threatened with serious reprisals, so the operation was cancelled.

What do you think about this. True of journalistic sensationalism?

Journalist IQ alert, journalist IQ alert! Una e "a incerca" alta "a avea intentia de...". rolleyes.gif

In plus, din pozitia ei de mare putere nucleara, Ucraina

Officially Ukraine was supposed to give back all nuclear weapons by 1996. Does it mean they still had them in 1999-2001, or today? huh.gif

Anyway, if the journalist had access to the declassified document, he should tell us how did SRI plan to hang on to the island after the easy conquest.

And if they planned this, could there be a plan to sabotage the work on Ukraine's Bastroe canal? I wonder how that would look like.

edit -- now you see why we need a nuclear submarine in the Black Sea! smile.gif

That would involve sending Romanian workers to do the job. laugh.gif laugh.gif
Like the ones that worked at the BCU in the 90's or those who completed the subway stations. laugh.gif laugh.gif

Sounds like a crazy ideea this with Snake Island, but i'm sure it was in realitty something. Maybe, one chief (maybe a president) asked - how we could retake the Snake Island and one of the answers was a military action and this was the secret planning.

I bet one thing: Argentina had a lot of them to retake the Malvinas. Just in case...
Maybe USA had plans to occupy the United Kingdom. Just in case, of course...

Not right on the topic but connected...

Looks like we mostly won. laugh.gif

The International Justice court gave to Romania 79% from the disputed continental plateau in Snake Island area.

The area is expected to contain significant oil and natural gas reserves.

The conflict was over the maritime boundary.

Here are the maps (source The Hague Tribunal):

Romania can take advantage of this only if it moves fast. The oil and natural gas pockets are not so strictly delimited and they won't wait for us forever. Especially if Ukraine starts pumping on its side of the boundary.

Unfortunately speedy action is not a trait in contemporary Romania.

p.s. looking at the maps I'd say Romania got more like 60% of what it asked for.

An hour ago on russian Chanel 1,comentators presented the Court decission as a grave defeat for Ukraine that was not able to stand for what was rightfully theirs.
They also said, that the Court was biased towards Romania that has no historic right in this zone of Black Sea,but is a member of E.C.

Morale:whithout Russia Ukraine is defensless.

We won a more advantageous maritime boundary and the neutralization of Ukraine's claims and efforts to make the Snakes' Island inhabitable. That was a big blow for Kiev. Now they can keep that piece of useless rock and build hotels on it. Good luck with that. laugh.gif

Right, I forgot that... I still don't want to go there... biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif
By winning crap, I was referring to material profit, not diplomatic. I wonder whether those Soviets will still continue to bother us in the Danube Delta, however - you know, just to remind us who's bigger/stronger etc.

That reminds me of that old Khruschev's time joke, when USA was competing w/ USSR, and Pravda had to declare the Americans winners: Our national team classed on a very important second place, whereas the capitalist American barely managed to finish before the last contestant.
Like that, Ukraine won, right? Or should I say "The Ukraine"?

The Romanian state will still tax the companies that will drill there.
