As I said earlier, to me it looks like a Russian airplane.
The markings are similar to the Russian cockade. Gen. Dénes |

I think they are correct. They fit with the era markings.

I didn't know that the Russians had this aircraft in their airforce. How many French types did they have between 1914-1917? Thanks, Bm |

It looks like "Vlaicu no. 2" for an amateur like me. It seems logical at first, as "Vlaicu no. 3", the most modern of all, was started but never finished. However, Vlaicu died by crashing his airplane "Vlaicu no. 2" into the ground, during his attempt to cross over the Carpathian Mountains. The airplane in the photo looks in a reasonable shape - in one piece, to say the least. So either the airplane "Vlaicu no. 2" was repaired after the death of Vlaicu, which is questionable considering that a dead body is kept only few days before burial, either in the photo we have the "Vlaicu no. 1". Moreover, "Vlaicu no. 1" was built in about 10 pieces (this latest information is from Wikipedia), so it was much easier to bring one and make it available for the burial ceremony. I think only one piece of "Vlaicu no. 2" was built. This post has been edited by Florin on April 13, 2009 06:28 pm |
