Maybe you have the details. They composed the escadrille which competed in the "Micii Antante si al Poloniei" contest, in Aug. 1928. By chance, I found yesterday in an old book about Romanian aeronautics.

Excellent source of some wonderful machinery. Sad to see 2 I.A.R. 80's crashed into each other.

Very nice! I think those with the I.A.R. 80 are for Florin!

Nice photos.
First photo is a collision during take-off on 28 April 1949 in Brasov between I.A.R.81-C No. 428 of Flt. 4 Asalt flown by Adj.Maj.Av. Alex Zlate and I.A.R.80-M No. 159 of Flt. 3 Asalt flown by Lt. M. Gheorghe. No. 428 was scrapped, pilot killed. No. 159 was repaired in Galati and then flew again with Reg. 4 Av. and then Reg 2 Av. in Craiova until 1951. Second photo is I.A.R.80-A No. 134. Accident on 28 August 1943 in Galati, training flight, flown by Adj.Av. Gheorghe Mociornita. Pilot survived, he was later shot killed in Slovakia whi8le flying No. 426 whose tailplane and engine cowl are now on display in MMN. The plane was repaired in Galati and flew again. That photo of No. 169 was published before in at least two books. For Florin: when a I.A.R.80 was involved in an incident, the factory demanded a thorough report with photos and details. All reports still exist in the Pitesti archives and a number of people have copies. The photos of accidents posted above are examples of photos from such files. I know of about 400 such photos, but I think there may be more. The I.A.R.80/81 was an extremely robust plane many of them survived incidents and were repaired a number of times. Radu |

What type is the last plane (tail number 126)? And what insignia is that on the tail? I have all the issues of "ModelIST" magazine, but I've never seen that photo.

Thank you, Horia!
EDIT: What about the PZL 11 41 and 44 from the pictures above? Are they the B model? What about the (identical) sign on their fuselage, what does it represent? Is it the emblem of a particular squadron? Thank you! This post has been edited by Agarici on March 16, 2013 03:59 pm |
