Wich country do you think that has the most efficient armed forces? This includes equipment, man training, size/cost/firepower, retaliation time and so on. If needed I will ad more entries. Note: not the best army, but the most efficient!

In terms of effectiveness, compared to size, there is only one possible winner: Israel.

I find the option for Sweden quite peculiar laugh.gif

I've voted UK for a variety of reasons. Maybe I'm a bit subjective too, influenced by history, but I considered some of the criteria enumerated by the author of this poll ("88mm"):

Equippment: USA has the best, but it's no surprise  with a budget like that... But without intending to start a long controversy I think that UK and Israel are equals in this domain. They have different best weapons, but overall I see them equals.

Man training: Israel - as they're in a permanent war, they have the best training possible. But this is relative, as the actual training is completed only in war combat (or whatever you may call the permanent skirmish that takes place in that area).

Size/cost/firepower: UK by far! Their military budget is small and the entire British armed forces are small in numbers (this reported to the size and population of the country, of course), but the firepower is impressive. Even with the cutbacks in the last period, the Brits have a strong army.

And other factors, not covered by "88mm": discipline and determination. The thing that always made the British army an outstanding opponent is their discipline, both in combat and in maneuvers. Plus the determination and the courage of the men in combat, standing against any foe without doubts and second thaughts! :keep:

Canada and Sweeden? I tryed to cover with them some countries wich in termes of population are small, but they have their own weapon development and type of training. At the oposite corner for me is Taiwan, which is under a US umbrela. If there is a general opinion that this countries shoulldn't be on the poll, because my argument is not sustainable, I will try to modify it.

Canada's own weapon development is insignificant.... most of the arsenal is based on existing models that are being modified and improved.

Honestly, I am surprised Germany isn't on that list instead of Canada. :?

As for brits having the best equipment? Oh, no, not really... the L85A1 Enfield is a mess, the Challenger II while being the best protected tank out there is also one of the slowest (along with the Merkava). The US suffer of similar problems when it comes to the M16A2, while a big improvement over the M16A1, it is still somewhat unreliable. The HK G36 is a much better weapon, and the US DoD indirectly admitted to that, as it's the starting point for the development of their OICW and XM8 assault rifles.

I voted for France, because of Leclerc battle tank (one of the fastest tanks today), Rafale, and Foreign Legion (the toughest unit in the world).

You're right somehow, but without the US backing them up I will not bet my money on them. Remember Yom Kippur war...

I don't see why... they are equipped with one of the deadliest tanks out there, the Strv 122, a modified Leopard 2A6EX. It is considered to be the most advanced version of the Leopard currently in service.

Their airforce is quite well established too, being provided with state of the art Saab aircraft.

The only thing unknown to me is how well their forces are trained... but I wouldn't underestimate them.

I voted for Israel.
-They had the best intaligence.Because of the vraiety of the population.
-They have the best airforce(yes yes)they fought real airwarfare against Mig 25 and 27 against SAM's and if you all remember in 1981/2/3(I don't remember)they distroyed the Ossirak nuclear facility in Irak (a very long way) .
-They have the best armured (the Merkave 2)and the best exp. in tank battle.
-Their special forces are trainig with DElta Force and need no introduction.
-They have the best and most organized rezerves in the world. And even women have been prepered for combat.
-Not to mention the nuclear power and unconventional wepons, that some say exist.

About Yom Kipur,
You think that the Soviets and the British would't do without the American aid during ww2?
I don't think so.
Israel had embargo from American armament till 1969 and they survived.
It would be harder but they could do without the American aid.
When the Pattons tanks began to arrive ,the arabs were already stoped.
And don't forget it takes a while to train the crews to use such a vehicle. Most rezervist were using Centurions and Chermans, and the war lasted only two weeks....

Israƫl too, no doubt. I don't even talk about equipment, just morale & training.

Did anyone see "Tsahal" by Claude Lanzmann ? A good overview. And a feeling of awe for the task and the situation.
