8 accidents in 9 years is average to low. Check the list with crashed USAAF/USN/USMC crates. Almost every week one/two/three of them. That happens when you put flight hours in your crates. The most important thing is that the pilot is alive to fight another day. Aircraft is important but not even as near as the pilot. I don't know what causes this accident but it proves, once again , that 2010 is a very realistical date to withdraw all Lancers from the first line.

The Mig-21 Lancer is basically a kamikaze sheep killer...
I think the army should sell these jets and buy NEW Mig-29's
And not to mention the effect it has on troops...
Nobody wants to be a pilot in a country where every month a plane crashes...
That's my opinion anyway mad.gif

Care to back up your claim of "every month a plane crashes" with any actual proof? As to your expert opinion on the MiG-21 Lancer, I presume you have arrived to it with the help of the pretigious Libertatea newspaper.

It seems and it is are two very different terms. Over the last 9 years of service, only 9 out of the 110 MiG-21 Lancers have crashed. That would be one every 12 months, not two months. It is far from being catastrophic. The Dutch Air Force for example lost 21 F-16s in a similar timespan and nobody qualifies the F-16 as a "kamikaze ship killer".

QUOTE
The F-16 is 273 times more likely to be involved in a fatal crash than a commercial aircraft (4.5 F-16 accidents per 100,000 flight hours vs 0.017 commercial accidents).
[...]Over the operating history of all F-16s, there has been one crash approximately every 28 days (13 crashes per year).

The point is to try to avoid to speculate, when the information is easily available. Better do some research if you aren't sure. We are trying to avoid as much as possible turning this forum in the likes of other poor quality Romanian forums.

Well from 15-20 H a year during Comunist era to 80-90H, some with even 150h a year that you should expect attrition in planes.
This will happend no matter what plane we would fly, this happend in a lot of otther places. Before reaching stupid conclusions, please check other airforces accident rate and report it to the number of hours per year etc.
Just don't believe the press in Romania ... they will say anything just to sell their papers.

Maybe a chinese engine for our LanceRs will be the solution for a more secure flight?
Maybe a new programme, co-operation with chinesse for next level in romanian MiG-21 life - 2 engine version?
Maybe some tens of 15 milions dollars FC-1 in place of LanceR, FC-1 with LanceR's electronics?

And what would we gain? Don't forget that LanceR was only an intermediate solution. I think it was the smartes idea (although I would opted to keep the 23's instead of 21's).
On the other hand, the engine has not such a big cause in these accidents but the ageing airframe.Besides, FC-1 has to be upgraded again (similar to the Lancer) to be able to carry the same ordinance LanceR can load.Of course, some of the weapons are to be mounted easily on the FC-1 , but the Westen ones would require some serious upgrade on the FC's airframes.

FC-1 had (some) BVR capability. And had a new airframe, zero hours of flights, like his engines. A cheap solution. One intended to replace F-4, F-5, Mirage III, etc. And, i think MiG-21.

I also had the same wish - "23". I don't think Romania could be more poor, if after 21 LanceR, follow a 23 "LanceR"-isation. ( biggrin.gif )
