Dear friends, hello!
This is my first post in this forum.
I want some detailed informations about the fights in Oituz pass - Romania on 24th of August 1944, when 7th Guards Soviet Army (Shumilov) liberated Poiana Sarata, the first village of Transylvania. Does anyone know a link where I can find something about this?
Thanks a lot.

QUOTE (ciprian @ July 28, 2006 12:20 pm)
on 24th of August 1944, when 7th Guards Soviet Army (Shumilov) liberated Poiana Sarata, the first village of Transylvania.

Soviet troops of the 2nd Ukrainian Front, 7th Guards Army, as well as the 23rd Tank Corps and the 5th Guards Cavalry Corps reached the Hungarian border in Transylvania at around noon, on Aug. 26, 1944, in the Uz and Csobános Valleys, in the area of Sósmező (Poiana Sarata). They quickly routed out the weak and lightly armed Hungarian defenders and advanced towards West, without actually capturing any locality, being repulsed by counter attacks of units in reserve. Reinforcements by German troops arrived the next day.

Sósmező (Poiana Sarata) fell only on August 30, being the first locality in Transylvania to fall to the Soviet Army. (Personally, I would avoid the word 'liberation', particularily by the Soviet Army).

Thank tou, Gen. Denes, for your answer. Yes, you are right about the word "liberation", but I had to express somehow. Now, can you help me with something more? I would like to know wich german/hungarian units fought those days arround Poiana Sarata (Sosmezo) and detailed evolution of the situation, if possible. Do you know a link?
Thanks again,
Ciprian
