As you might expect, not too complimentary and none too subtle:

Actually I think the one with stick in mouth and tail up is Mannerheim. Mebbe the last one is just an 'extra'
This is how they saw Mannerheim: (Again, Image from 'Kukryniksy' by Grafika Press, Moscow) This post has been edited by Nestor Makhno on January 19, 2008 07:49 pm |

If I were to guess, I'd say Japan because they didn't participate in Hitler's war on the Soviet Union. The dog in the caricature is watching from a distance, seemingly interested but not joining in the "feast".

Japan cannot be as the dog doesn't have slanted eyes.

The average Soviet citizen reading the magazine should understand it as Japan. The fact that the dog looking from beyond horizon does not have slanted eyes, and no any other marks (hat, medals, uniform) to be recongnized, was a precaution against a possible complaint from Japan's embassy. It allowed a denial, in case of a Japanese protest. The color of the skin of that dog is very... Japanese. Because the artist insisted on mustache, and that "dog" has a lean face, I would say it was meant to remind of Hideki Tojo. This post has been edited by Florin on January 23, 2008 01:02 am |
