Today is the 15th anniversary of the day when the Republic of Moldova declared itself independent from the Soviet Union. At that time it had the same anthem as Romania and its language was explicitly named 'Romanian'.
The photos above, taken on 27 August 1991, are from BBC Romanian. |

What is the percentage of the main nationalities today, as they declared themselves at census? What is the politic line of the government of Moldavia, these days?
In 1812 all non-Romanian minorities, put together, were less than 1 percent! According to my Atlas from 1935, few counties from Bessarabia had the best land for agriculture from all Romania (i.e. percent of usable land, and the quality of the soil). It is possible that a politic movement toward union will not create the anger from the Slavic neighbors as it would happen in the 1990's. Anyway, this was always a sensible subject for Russia, which is much stronger today than in the 1990's. On the other side, as we all know, the inhabitants of Romania and Moldavia are not eager for union, too. We simply do not have the desire to undertake the costs, as Germans did in 1990. Or the feeling that we are the same nation is not so strong anymore? This post has been edited by Florin on August 29, 2006 01:52 pm |

On this I beg to disagree. They are 'Moldovans'. Quite a difference, isn't it? |
