Check out Lindbergh's speeches against US involvement in WWII:
http://www.charleslindbergh.com/americanfirst/index.asp "If any one of these groups--the British, the Jewish, or the administration--stops agitating for war, I believe there will be little danger of our involvement." The U.S. entered in war because Japan attacked it, and found itself in war with Germany because Hitler declared war against the U.S., and not vice-versa. I would not underestimate the might of the American isolationist movement, regarding 1940-1941. But indeed, I would give to Roosevelt some credit in driving the Japanese berserk, by treating them as a kind of second hand power and threatening them with sanctions. Japan imported much of its needed petroleum and gasoline from the U.S., and the threat of cuting the flow of oil unless Japan will withdraw from China shows either an arogant underestimation of Japan, either a clever manipulation to defy the Japanese Empire, and dare it into combat. Of course I agree with Roosevelt for his try to protect China, because in that certain situation China was victim and Japan was the aggressor, and moreover the Japanese behaved in a savage way in regard with the Chinese civilians. I am just not sure if Roosevelt did that for the moral aspect of the problem, or he had other interests in his mind. This post has been edited by Florin on October 29, 2006 04:59 am |
