Weird, but is close to be true. I heard long time ago this story and I tried to check it. What I found sounds quite interesting. Although the concept car did have a different name, eventually was baptized Mustang in the honor of the P51. Actually there are a lot of old commercial pictures in which the car is presented with a P51 in the background.
I found also that the car was designed by Joe Oros who is indubitable from a Romanian family. Now, why Ford will use the P51 for inspiration and commercialism when the airplane has something in common with GM via Allison? Well, the story is that a key person in P51 development was Joe’s relative and impressed/persuaded him with the P51 achievements. I didn’t find so far who that person was. Does anyone knows the full story? |

What makes you think so (as you're 'indubitable')? 'Oros' (originally spelled as 'Orosz') actually means 'Russian' in the Hungarian language. A quite common family name in Hungarian inhabited areas. Gen. Dénes This post has been edited by Dénes on February 27, 2008 06:27 pm |

Excuse my ignorance but I don’t know anything about Joe’s name etymology. However, Joe Oros seems to be a very famous name in the automotive world and if you google him you’ll find hundreds of references (including his impressive bio with references to his Romanian origin). Minutes ago checking on Internet I found that Joe is still living somewhere in California being active with some ROMANIAN church. Well, maybe is good idea to contact him and to learn abut the P51 connection (if any).
