you know in pictures you see some romanian soldiers with a box on a stick like in this picture:

Obviously he is caring that MG ammo can on the stick as it is easier, the full can is heavy and the wire handle makes things worst, over the shoulder is more comfortable on long marches.

I certainly agree it's an ammo box (suggesting to me that the soldier is part of the gun crew, to answer part of your question). But I think that's his rifle that it's hanging off of, not a "stick!"
