Tanks & AFV's at Romanian Military Museum, ...and some artillery and trucks, too.

Just discovered this very nice site. As there is such an obvious wealth of "local" information here, I thought I'd post to let you know of a thread we have going on the AFV Discussion Group pertaining to the collection at the Romanian Military Museum where at least three of our members have had the privilige to visit, including myself. Probably there is nothing there you haven't already seen, but it's been easily most popular thread on our forum with over 6,200 hits at this writing and members here may have some insights into the collection that we lack, for obvious reasons. Rather than take up your space hotlinking a LOT of pictures here, I'll just post the link and invite you to view the thread and if you wish to hotlink any of the pics posted within it to here, it shouldn't be a problem. If you have any comments to offer, here or there, we'd like to hear them. I can convey them or you can add to the discussion there (you have to register to post, same rules there as here, from what I can discern).

Our forum is pretty much confined to armored fighting vehicles, but we permit occasional foray into related areas.

I would be particularly interested in any background on that cut-up M4 Sherman at the museum, if anybody has any information. Where it came from, how it came to be that way, etc.

The Sherman was recovered some years ago from the Prut riverbed. It was used by the Soviets, among other American tanks delivered through the Lend-Lease Aid.

Thanks for the update about the river extraction....we had made an estimated guess about t the lend-lease aspect. Do you know how it came to be so symetrically cut? Was it being scrapped and someone changed their mind? It's unlikely that it was having it's armor evaluated because the cut sections are all at the rear and the front has not been shot up. Just a matter of curiosity.

On another matter, what ultimately became of the few Pz. V's in service with the Romanian Army in the post-war period as heavy tanks? One source says they were emplaced as essentially fixed-position pillboxes on the borders, buried up to the turrrets or something. Pity the museum doesn't have one. Do you know where these went, really? (Any pictures?!)
