"....some here describe as the first war in cyberspace, a monthlong campaign that has forced Estonian authorities to defend their pint-size Baltic nation from a data flood that they say was set off by orders from Russia or ethnic Russian sources in retaliation for the removal of the statue."
Digital Fears Emerge After Data Siege in Estonia http://www.nytimes.com/2007/05/29/technolo...r=1&oref=slogin This is obviously going to be a new kind of warfare, and guess who is likely to be on the front lines? IMO it bears a close watch by people like we forumists, any number of whom could be potential cybersoldiers. My sense is that, with all the IT talent running around Romania, she would fare at least as well as the Estonians seem to have so far. Also, I'm sure it hasn't escaped notice by world leaders that a true offensive capability in cyberwar would be a lot more easily available than say, nuclear weapons, and possibly more effective ???? During the Cold War, it was often assumed that the next battlefield would be outer space, (ala Star Wars). How ironic it turns out to be cyberspace comments? |
