Have been asked by some friends here in the states who are interested in women's roles in the Romanian army during WWII. Since the German army and the Allies utilized women for various duties seems logical that Romania did the same.
What were their roles and duties? Does anyone know about what type of uniforms were used? Will pass information along to them as it arrives in posts. Thanks |

As far as I know, they served in the medical system (nurses), in logistics and administration (for example mail censorship).

I think they worked in propaganda as well - producing newsreels, photos, etc.
Here is an example of a woman in uniform - she is also wearing a medal. In addition, it was fairly common for wives and daughters of officers to volunteer as nurses / nurses aides at military infirmaries and hospitals, either behind the front lines or inside Romania or Romanian-occupied territories. However, they acted as volunteers for the Red Cross or charitable organizations. They were not enrolled in the army. Hope this helps. |

Very nice photo!
The lady is probably a medic as she carries “The Sanitary Merit” cross. She wears a kind of summer military uniform with a “rubashka” (very common among the Romanian officers on the Eastern Front) and the “Sam Browne” belt with diagonal strap (that was carried only by officers). Very interesting is also the “Propaganda Service” badge carried above the right breast pocket by the cameraman on the right. This post has been edited by Kepi on February 05, 2008 06:11 am |

Great and thanks for the info. Trying to open up reenacting more to females so it starts to grow even more. Any other pics that can be posted are great along with what they would usually have worn in the branch they served it along with any gear.

Some very famous women were pilots in White Squadron. Actually, I'm sure that everybody know that.

They were civilians-volunteers.
Not part of the army. |
