What is the story of the Disney emblems on some of the Romanian fighter planes in WWII?
Maybe it sounds a bit naïve, but why did the pilots choose particularly Disney emblems in a period when they somehow symbolised the enemy? How were they regarded/accepted by the higher authorities? |

At the time when those Disney characters were choosen as squadron/group emblems in 1940/1941, they did not symbolise the enemy yet (as Rumania declared war on the USA only much later on). It's interesting to note that such Disney emblems were occasionally present on several Luftwaffe fighter pilots' mounts as well (eg. "Mickey Mouse" on the Bf 109G of Horst Carganico). |

Thanks Dénes for the reply. I did not know that they were chosen as emblems as early as 1940 when of course Romania was not yet in a state of war. But how were they regarded/accepted by the higher authorities or the Germans later during the war?

Here are some examples that I have found in an article in the Romanian magazine Modelism
- Cpt. Horia Agarici or Lt. Ion Dobran had Mickey Mouse. - Adj. Tiberiu Vinca had Donald Duck. - 6th Fighter Group had Bambi. - Lt. Tache Baciu of the 62nd Squadron had another version of Bambi. Maybe the others can give you more examples. |

Adolf Galland also had Mikey mause as his personal emblem.
There we no many cartoons those days... The Walt Disney's were the most popular . Acording to Dicesare the pilots of Grupul 7 choose Donald, and they had a guy at the airfield who was a great painter ,and did the job. He also said that in a certain period, the pilots were not alowed anymore to paint cartoons on their planes. |

When did this happen? Were they also somehow 'persuaded' to erase the old emblems? |

From 1943 on the 7th Fighter Group did not have teh Donald Duck emblems anymore. This can be explained probably through the fact that in March 1943, when a part of the group returned to the front as part of JG 3 and flew on Bf-109Gs, it had German mechanics who did not paint the Donald Duck anymore.
The 53rd Fighter Squadron retained its mounted Mickey Mouse well into 1944. |

Other Disney character in Romanian Air force was " Pluto" on He- 112 ( 5th FG ). Also seen on PZL 11 C from a school ( Ghimbav ? ) was a a " Pinochio" emblem ( I am not sure if it's Disney character ).
In 1944 the emblemes on some fighters group ( 7th and 9th ) became more patriotic look ( with tricolor background and royal crown) the war was no more a kids game. :guns: |

 Thanks alot !
The wheels seem to be the same as in the Me 109 models. 700 hp engine didn't make it very effective later in the war I assume..any of them remaining ( or Bf-109s ) ? Pluto remains still to be seen later. Juke |

There is an article " Romanian PZL 11 aces" in Modelism magazine with a photo of PZL 11C with Pinochio emblem under the cockpit.

The book on ARR (title without the first 'R', for Royal), published by Modelism, the same photo is captioned as the mount of Adj. av. Dimache. Thus, Pinocchio was not a unit emblem, but a personal one.
