I red that according to census in 1890 there was 38.624 Slovaks in romania, in 1910 42.674.
After WWI between years 1947 - 1948 21 000 Slovaks from Romania emigrated to Czechoslovakia. Now aroun 20 000 Slovaks are living in Romania. Slovaks in Romania are living in counties? Bihor, Arad, Timiš, Salaj, Satu Mare and Hunedoara. My question is. All this territories become in 1940 part of Hungary or some of them stayed in Romania. Did Slovaks from this part chance to serve in Romanian Army in periods 1941-44. If all this territories were part of Hungary since 1940, is there posibility that after liberation Romanians and Slovaks were drafted and served on Western front in periods August 1944-1945? Many thanks |

Those counties ended up both in Hungary and Rumania in Sept. 1940.
I believe the ethnic minorities were drafted into the respective armies, without being allowed into the so-called élite branches. Fo a thread on this topic, posted on my forum on Hungary & W.W. 2, seee this link: http://denes.us/forums/YaBB.pl?num=1165076765 Gen. Dénes |

So if I understand correctly: counties were actually divided between Hungary and Romania.
Is there some serious work about minorities in Romanian Army during WWII? |

No. Some ended up in Hungary, some stayed in Rumania.
So far the topic was not really discussed for various reasons. I am aware of only one such work, a book by Prof. Valeriu Avram on German airmen in Rumanian service. An interesting and groundbreaking work. Gen. Dénes |

Hi Pitika,
From memory, 10% is probably a slight underestimate for Romania over 1941-44, when the country had been reduced to a rump of about 13 million people. Again from memory, I think Romania's maximum mobilisation came in mid 1944, when about 1,200,000 men were under arms. In addition there had been several hundred thousand permanent losses (dead, captured, disabled wounded, etc.) in earlier years. I would guess that somewhere between 10% and 15% of the population served in the armed forces at various times over 1941-44. Cheers, Sid. |
