Marghita 1944

Anything about the battles around Marghita in the fall of 1944! Please.

Marghita from Bihor? I'm from there but I haven't heard of any battles in the area, but there are some german and russian soldiers buried in the cemeteries there (2 german unknown soldiers and at least 30 russian soldiers).

My grandparents live some tens of years in Marghita.

Oltului street, the newly named Jakai Mor (I hate that), but I'm a student in Cluj-Napoca so I'm home only during the winter, Easter and summer holyday.

That should be Jókai Mór, a Hungarian writer.

And may I ask you, what do you hate it? As far as I know, Hungarians are (still) the majority in Marghita/Margitta...
I even have a friend over there, Gergely András, a former university pal of mine.

I hate the name just because the town hall didn't ask us if we want to change the name of the street and we have to redo all the paper work because the old street name isn't valid anymore...so that's a lot of paper work to do and a lot of money+time.
I don't know from where you've heard about the hungarians being the majority in the city....it isn't correct. The romanian population is over 50% of the city's inhabitants. I'll post my findings from wikipedia...but I think that the romanian population is over 50%

Currently, around 19,000 people live in Marghita, 17,000 of whom live in Marghita city, 1,200 in the village of Cheţ and 800 in the village of Ghenetea.

Ethnically, it is comprised of:

Romanians - 50 %
Hungarians - 46 %
Others (Slovaks and Roma) - 4%

In every romanian town/city where romanian citizens of hungarian ethnicity took a number of seats as "consilieri" at the townhall, they changed the names of some streets, giving names relevant for Hungary, not for Romania, even if the cities have no majority of romanian citizens of hungarian ethnicity. It is the case of Arad and Cluj, only to remember 2 of the major cities.

But I believe that this discussion is off-topic here.

I'll tell you this...when the elections for mayor were held and there was only Pocsaly and Voicu I went and voted them both so they won't argue over my vote

Hmmmm...there is someone who might know if there was a battlefield near the town. Mitzahol do you know, I think former, history teacher from O. Goga highschool Laurentiu Florea? He was in the army, an officer of the armor regiment near Turda (I think) and he wrote an article about the romanian army in the highschool newspaper several years ago when I was an editor there. I had a chance to talk to him a cuple of times...he knows history.
