Last year, the Army's publishing house made a relatively rare gesture and published the war diary kept by a simple artillery sergeant. Not very rich in details of the operations, as most of his service was spent watching the Crimean shores, but it gives an insight of the life of the regular soldiers, rarely present in war time memoirs: food, daily routine, beatings by officers etc, but also his impressions on the places and people he sees.
Another interesting side is the details given in the publisher's notes about the sergeant's unit: the relatively obscure 53rd Artillery Regiment. |
