Photos of people wearing awards from the communist period are not seen often (except for some photos of soldiers and party officials).

Let's start with a Soviet-style photo of Leontin Salajan (from the photo gallery of www.mapn.ro):

A photo of professor Veceslav Harnaj. It is an interesting photo, because he is also wearing some foreign awards: the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic (Grand Officer) and the French Order of Agricultural Merit.

I looks to date from sometime after 1974, going by the medals the officer is wearing:
Order of Work (class unknown);
Order of Miltar Merit, classes 1, 2 & 3 (this last has twisted on the ribbon and shows the plain reverse of this Order);
30th Anniversary of Liberation medal (1974);
50th Anniversary of he Founding of the Romanian Communist Party medal (1971);
25 years from the Proclamation of Independance medal (1972).

I am surprised that there is no Military Academy graduate's badge being worn.

I'm assuming that this is an army officer but can fellow members, experts in uniforms, coment on the rank or branch of service, please?

He is colonel (3 stars and 2 stripes on shoulderboard), but i can't see the branch insignia.
