Having exhausted my avaliable sources I am still seeking data, locations and activity for the Romanian 91st & 83rd Regts. (20th Div) after they were rolled into the Stalingrad pocket following the November 21/22 encirclement.
I understand the Divisional HQ was at Basagrino Station and was later moved to the Pitomnik vicinity. I further understood that the regiments were divided as combat teams within the adjacent German Divisions but have contradictory info on this especially given the actions of the 82nd Regiment in late November against Soviet attacks near Zibenko.
I assume that almost all the 2-3000 Romanian POW's taken in late January belong to these Regiments.
Has anyone ever heard of any survivors from these Regiments returning home?
A last question. Shortly after my last visit to Stalingrad I saw pictures of Romanian government officials and clergy of the Romanian Orthodox Church visiting the Stalingrad battlefield and receiving the remains of appox 700 Romanian soldiers. Does anyone have any info or follow up on this visit? Thanks Ralph

I believe the 91st Regiment was almost completely wiped out during the attack on 20 November. Some 50 men survived or escaped capture. The 83rd Regiment also lost its first battalion during the fighting.

Besides remnants of the 20th Division, the 1st Cavalry Division (including a motorized artillery battalion detached to it from the 1st Armored Division) and the Col. Voicu Detachment from the 13th Division were forced into the pocket, but in the northern sector of the city. I guess the several thousand survivors included men from both units.

I have the memoirs of a Romanian Stalingrad survivor, but they are rather bizarre and I have my doubts regarding their veracity.
