What Really Happened On D-Day?
June 6, 1944... Well, I assume that everyone knows what D-Day is so here's a link to wiki - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Normandy We all know the official story of course... But what really happened?.... Was there a fight on Normandy beaches? At the time of D-Day the war was over. 80% of German army was fighting in the EASTERN front. In fact, the Germans didn't even have troops to fight the invasion on Normandy beaches. And pictures prove it. Do you see ANY German soldiers on the beach? Source: http://www.rjgeib.com/ Source: http://users.breathe.com/martin.reeve/ And from the air - [photo removed - lack of sources] Take a look - US marines were standing which mean that they were not even afraid to be shot! Source: http://www.annefrankguide.net So what is the true story? [edited by admin - mention of sources] |

While no one is doubting that the majority of German forces were engaged on the Eastern front, you fall into the same "extremism" as the likes of Ambrose, who ignore the Soviet contribution. The war was won by an alliance, not by the Soviet Union alone.
Btw, do some researching, there were no marines landing on European beaches. |

i beleive the full offensive begun in early morning, and by noon the beaches were secured, so what you see in the pictures are the reenforcements and equipment landings, these were happening on 6 june afternoon and second day.....by the time the ships were deploying troops(as you see in pics), the rangers were 10-15km inland fighting the germans.
another thing, i have a friend, he's from germany, but has a house in romania, and at one christmas , the year with private rian movie, his grandfather, a ww2 veteran that saw russia and in june 6 was on normandy, told us about the landings. one example, on early morning of 6, the bombing of the shore started and he said that he was inland in a fortified location, some 5-8 km from shore. the ground was shaken so hard becouse of the massive bombing, and they saw a courtain of fire between their position and beach line fortifications, so they thought that every pillbox or bunker is kaputt. so they retreatedfrom their position, later to find out that the american bombing of the shore was not precised, but with some errors they bombed some 1-2 km back of bunkers positions. so that's why on d -day there were so many dead or wounded us troops, becouse ships that fired on bunkers didn't do an exact job. later he told us that they knew that if the americans reach inland the war is lost, and later that day he and his friend used a a stamp that they were having and made them self an ticket of trip. he told us that all the time they saw ss troops sent as reeinforcement, on trucks singing about victory of germany. i don't remember the old man's surname, but his grandson is Nathanael Maier, we use to call him Nathi. great guy This post has been edited by seeker on February 01, 2008 08:26 am |

So Kursk is not like we've been told for a long time, now D-Day was not like we've been told. Next thing someone will say WWII was just a skirmish.

the average strength of the "Ostheer" in 1944 was around 2.200.000 -2.500.000 men. 80% would mean that the total stregth of the german army in 1944 was around 3.000.000. nope. in 1944, the eastern front tied up less than 50% of the total manpower of the german army (not limited to ground troops). |

The truth is you are Trolling as usual, posting more propaganda threads. This thread with your posts is an insult to the memory of the men of the Allied Forces who died to take the pressure off the Soviet Military on the Eastern Front. Just to keep Joe Stalin happy! Not only are his posts complete and utter rubbish he could not identify just who or what is shown in his pictures, (which he provides no source for!!) I would like to see an explanation just as to why this person is being allowed to continue with this by the Administration of this Forum. NCR, trolling is not exactly a violation of forum rules and we cannot ban someone just because some of the members want it. Actually this topic lowers NGoAs spam record, as it is a tentative of a discussion on a military history subject. Keep in mind that there are members that broke the rules, including you in the post above before I edited it, and suffered no consequences.
Please adopt a more restrained approach and discuss the subject if you wish to. Unlike Putin, we don't put the fist in the mouth of those that have different opinions or points of view. WHo knows, maybe NgoA will learn something of this topic. |

He just pointed out your lack of knowledge about WW2 facts? OK. So? I can asure you that I am not the only one who thought that there was big battle on the French beaches during US-British invasion (aka D-Day). By the way, I wasn't asking you. However, if you are so knowledable than answer the question properly. |

When I look at this picture (is it zeppelins in the air?) I begin to wonder - what happened to all-mighty Luftwaffe?

EDUCATION 101 FOR THE UNEDUCATED IN THE WAYS OF WW2: No they are not Zeppelins, they are Barrage balloons chained to the decks of the Allied invading ships and supply ships, they forced the Luftwaffe to drop their bombs from greater heights with far less accuracy. I too am wondering but its not about WW2. Kevin in Deva. This post has been edited by New Connaught Ranger on February 01, 2008 07:43 pm |

Many countries were involved in D-Day. The three main nations were Britain, who attacked code named Gold and Sword beaches. The United States who attacked Utah and Omaha beaches. And Canada who attacked Juno Beach. Also their were units fighting for the free French. Soldiers from the following were involved as well on D-Day: Australia, Belgium, Czechoslovakia, Free-France, Greece, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway and Poland also fought as well.
