The construction of the box makes me think it's not military it must very uncomfortable if it's worn in diagonal with a strap.

Looks more like a "casoleta", medical item to sterilise the surgical equipment.

I dont know how to translate "casoleta" into english

The "casoleta" should have holes in it.
The steem must get insode in order to sterilize the items inside.

but why does it need to be locked?

the color was kaki to blue....

I have also a similar item from my grandfather, he told me that it is a canteen and was used by german troops in ww1.
My item it is hallmarked with " G STIEHLE MEMMINGEN "

Yes, C-2, you are right. I looked only to the shape of the item, not paying attention to detail... My fault

It can not be medical or food related as it's made from steel an only painted, if it would be medical or for food it must be made from stainless steel, aluminum or enameled or tin plated, otherwise it will rust (as it did).

And a military mess tin with a latch... I don't think so.

Its the upper part of a " sufertas" widely used in the fifties for carring food both for military and civil uses.The upper part was used for soup.

i don't think so..... becouse it was painted inside and we all know that food related boxes were from aluminium or stainless steel.

i personally think it was something technical, see the fixing "ears" on the side and the locker.

and least....it is 100% military. the man that sold this to me had in the addic also a piece of flak binoculars and a tripod for periscope(german items) and he said that this was german too...but no markings, so i'm not sure.

Exactly because of the "ears" it looked to me as a sufertash.Anyway what is the diametre and the capacity?

I'm just trying to guess: what if it is a metal box for cinema tapes??

I also thought of that,but the film cans look complectly diferent,and Seeker is right ,food containers were made of aluminium or emailed.
