Gheorghe Mardarescu was born on 4 August 1866 in Iasi.
He graduated the Infantry and Cavalry Officer School in Bucharest in 1888 and between 1892-1894 he attended the Military Academy and then command courses in Brueck and Spandau.

Between 1901-1906 he was the director if studies at the Military Academy. He then commanded the Infantry Firing School and was chief if staff for the 1st and then the 2nd Corps. In 1915 he was appointed commander of the Military Academy.

After 15 August 1916, brig general Gheorghe Mardarescu received the command of the 18th Infantry Brigade. At the end of the month he was appointed chief of staff of the 3rd Army, commanded by the future marshal Averescu. When general Averescu took over the 2nd Army in September that year, he brought along his chief of staff. Mardarescu remained in this position also during the heavy battles of 1917, in which the 2nd Army played a very important role.

In February 1918 he was promoted to major general and became the Technical Inspector of the Infantry. Mardarescu remained in this position until 11 April 1919, when he was appointed commander of the Romanian troops in Transylvania.

After the war he was the Minister of Defense between 25 March 1922 and 30 March 1926. In 1927 he was promoted to the rank of lt. General.

Gheorghe Mardarescu passed away on 5 September 1938 in Neuheimbad, Germany.
