Hello Everyone

I have a bit of a problem. I know my Great Grandfather served in the Great war but i don't know which army he served in as he was a conscript and didn't speak much about his experiences to my Father. He only mentioned that he was always cold in the trenches and that his hearing was damaged by the noise of bombardments. He also mentioned seeing a motor cycle drive over a mine (or UXO) and blow up.

He lived on the family vineyard in Bessarabia when war broke out and was a barrel maker by trade. He mentioned the soldiers came and forced our family off the vineyard. Thats all I know.

His name was Edward Ensslen (Enslen). Any help would be greatly appreciated on find out about his service. I really want to determine which awards he would have earned and Which units/Battle he served in.

Cheers
Chris

Hi Chris,
To what war do you refer? In Europe and other countries when you say " Great War "people generally think of WWI.In Russia "Great..." (Velikaya otecestvenaya) refers to WWII.

I am refering to the first world war 1914-19. He emigrated to Canada in 1928 (either 28 or 23 i'm pretty sure 28). Any idea where to start my research quest?

Cheers
Chris

You can start by asking your elder relatives which might know more, or elder peoples from the village of your great-grandfather.

Chris,
If your grandfather was living in Bessarabia at the time of his conscription, he was inducted in the Russian Imperial Army and not into romanian one so this Forum is not the best address.
All the best
Dan
