Hi,

when were the I. and II. Rom AKs assigned to the Angriffsgruppe Hollidt? Was it 25/11/42?

From a post by Dragos (as far as my clumsy Romanian knowledge goes), the 14. Inf Div of the II. AK was reconstituted from remnants of other Romanian divisions on the Don. When did this happen? What elements were used?

Thanks a lot for Your assistance,

Abel

The "Hollidt" Group was planned on 20 November 1942, with the 1st Romanian Army Corps (7th and 11th Infantry Divisions), the 294th German Division and the 6th German Armored Division. In the same day was planned the "Heim" Group made of the 2nd Romanian Army Corps (remnants of 9th Infantry and 7th Cavalry Divisions), 48th German Armored Corps and "Lascar" Group. On 21 November, the 2nd Romanian Army Corps was subordinated to the 17th German Army Corps, part of the "Hollidt" Group. The "Hollidt" Group came into action on 22 November 1942. It now comprised the 1st and 2nd Romanian Corps, the German 17th Corps, the 62nd and 294th Infantry Divisions (German) and a group from the right wing of the 8th Italian Army (between Veshenskaya and Arjanovsky). At this moment the Romanian 1st Army Corps was made of the 7th, 9th and 11th Infantry Divisions, while the 2nd Army Corps was made of the remnants of the 7th Cavalry Division and 14th Infantry Division.

The disposal of the 2nd Army Corps on 23 November was as following:
Detachment Zlotescu (remnants of the 14th Infantry Division) with 2 platoons at Lesnoi Bodiaga, 2 platoons at Svidinov, 2 platoons at Krasnokutskaya, 2 platoons at Ilarionov, 1 platoon at Sterikov. In reserve, 3 platoons at Fomin.

The 7th Cavalry Division, with an efective of 310 men, 10 anti-tank guns, 2 machineguns, 7 LMGs and 2 mortars was on the hills 10 km NE of Kuteinikov.

Hi Dragos, thanks for the excellent reply. I'd like to discuss some issues here.

This grouping was never carried out AFAIK, was it? The 6. Pz Div must be a typo, as this unit was still weeks away from the frontline, most likely a mistake for the 62. Inf Div.

AGr. Hollidt was officially formed 23/11/42 from the XVII. AK staff and parts of the XXXXVIII. PzK staff, with the latter joining the new HQ. The Italian group joined Hollidt on this very same day. Am I wrong here?

9. Rom Inf subordinated to the I. Rom AK 20/11/42, correct?

Any info about how / when did these units under the 14. Rom Inf HQ get to this sector of the front? The bulk of the division was with Lascar AFAIK.

Thanks a lot for Your time and assistance,

Abel

The 9th Infantry Division was subordinated to the 2nd Corps at the start of Operation Uranus. It was subordinated to the 1st Corps on 21 November.

You are probably right.

My info comes from the book: Mihail Vasile Ozum, Petre Otu, "Infranti si uitati. Romanii in batalia de la Stalingrad", Bucharest, 1999. Unfortunately I couldn't find yet another source to match the dates for Hollidt Group.

Actually the remnants of the 14th Infantry were scattered on a large area, in a state of disorder and lack of communication. I think the command of the division was assumed even if only a small part of the division was available, since the rest of division were stragglers or missing.

And thanks to Abel for the excellent question.

The narrative that Dragos gave (above) helped me fill in some missing facts, regarding the I and II Romanian Corps, that I was unaware of.

Thanks and Best Regards,
