Did Romanian Airforce launch raids on the Soviet Navy.
What planes were used?
Torpedo bombers?
Stukas?
IAR 81?

IIRC, in 1941 Blenheims and He-111H3s were also used for several anti-shipping raids and some sinkings were claimed. See for details: http://www.worldwar2.ro/forum/index.php?showtopic=6

Hi Cantacuzino,

While those types were capable of carrying torpedoes, were they ever actually issued with any? They certainly seem never to have been used.

The only strikes against Soviet vessels I can recall were medium bomber attacks on the port of Odessa in 1941. I doubt their effects can be distinguished from similar attacks by German aircraft.

Cheers,

Sid.

Thanks Victor,

But the achievements that you mentionned are from the Odessa campaign, so the bomber units involved used bombs and no torpedos (at least for the Blenheim unit and i suppose that it was the same for the He 111 unit).

My question is about the unit based in Romania, (Mamaia ???) that used the He 111 H6 armed with torpedos. Also for the Cant Z501; although i'm quite shure (?) that they didn't do any achievements.

But we are right, i have to read again the 3 ARR books... time lacking.

raevski's initial question was not strictly restricted to torpedo-bombers.

Your question was if there was any success or not.

In the above mentioned book, at page 251 there is a profile of the Bristol Blenheim Mk. I no. 5. The caption reads:

QUOTE
Romanian Bristol Blenheim Mk. I no. 5 a member of the group that damaged and then sank the Soviet cargo vessel Novorosiisk (1351 tons) on 12 August 1941, at 1204 hours and then damaged the gunboat Krasnii Adjaristan during the siege of Odessa. A group of 22 aircraft damaged 9 days later the cargo vessel Briansk (3378 tons) and missed the leader Tashkent.

On the next page, there is a profile of a Potez 63-1 no. 8. The caption reads:

QUOTE
Potez 63-1 no. 8 "Come Oldie" in original French camouflage paint during the campaign for Liberation of Bessarabia, 74th Squadron. No. 19 sunk two transport barges during the siege of Odessa.
