My point exactly! Why pay more for some gizmos one never uses (see also MS Office 2007), unless you're a kid who wants to show off? This post has been edited by MMM on March 02, 2009 12:06 pm -------------------- M

Imperialist,
No, not every piece of road can be "improved". The road had to be built for that purpose from the very beginning to take the impact. A runway has a multilayered bed going as far as 1 metre below the surface. Imagine the force exerted by a ten ton aircraft coming at more than 100 Km per hour. Unless the road has the right capabilities, it will simply crater. The plane may land, but will be unable to take off again without major repairs to road and aircraft (if it survives ). Just having a straight stretch on a motorway will not be enough. and anyway, it is only a part of the "solution". You need to refuel it and you need to rearm if you want it to take off and do the next job. Unless you have the infrastructure there, then the infrastructure needs to be brought to the plane, in other words the trucks with the fuel and weapons need to either already be there or be on their way. The enemy can monitor such movements and figure out what you are up to. Radu PS By the way, you found that runway on Google Earth. What about the enemy? Do you think they will find it on Google Earth? And if they do, what do you think they will do about it? This post has been edited by Radub on March 02, 2009 10:44 am |

Let me put it in another way: I leave for Bucharest with a Tico, you leave for Constanţa with an Iveco truck with trailer; we use the same road and we'll eventually meet. Each of us has a MG-42 machine-gun. Who sees who the first, who opens fire first and who's easier to miss?
In another view, if we fought an enemy able to destroy all the straight roads in Ro. from the first day of the conflict, we shouldn't worry, as we'll all be dead already! P.S Tico=Gripen and Iveco with trailer=F16. Thank you, MMM for translation. This post has been edited by STI on March 02, 2009 06:24 pm |

STI,
I have no idea what you are talking about. I have no idea who the "enemy" is and what they want from us. Radu |

Radu! Are we or are we not NATO members? Who's the enemy of NATO? No one?

I don't know. You tell me! This is a discussion about aircraft not about potential enemies. Radu |

But the point is not in hiding the fact that you use the roads but in having so many dispersed sections that the enemy cannot knock them and your airstrips out in a "blitz" and is thus unable to indirectly neutralize your fighters early in the conflict. You can also consider that a lot of decoys/fake facilities can be used for the refueling and rearming points that you mention. -------------------- I

One cannot keep wondering how stupid foreign countries are.26 of them fell into this trap and operate 4400 F 16.What a superior alternative they missed !And most of them REALLY have motorways capable of landing a plane.

Really?! Since it's about a military plane, it's supposed to be used AGAINST someone, right? The strategy means to adequate your means of deffense towards the potential enemies. Feel free to argue This post has been edited by MMM on March 02, 2009 07:51 pm -------------------- M

All this discution about motorways is sensles.,Presuming this sistem will work (it did not stop germans from loosing the war,and they had motorways) what you'll achive is a slower rate of atrition ,and you,ll lose your planes not in two weeks but in three. My question was HOW YOU REPLACE THEM ?

I was talking about the principle behind that system, in reply to your statement that the sections that I found on Google cannot be hidden from the enemy either. The point was not in them being hidden. -------------------- I
