You mean "re-upgrade" them? Oh, dear, with all our Romanian skills, we'll manage to make that a more expensive operation than buying new planes... sad.gif

1.75 billion for 7 fighters. ohmy.gif

I can understand why they stopped buying.

The same happened with the B-2.

Let's not mix bombers with fighters! The bombers are supposed to be more expensive and needed in smaller numbers, AFAIK! But what about B-2, then?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/B-2_Spirit

21 aircrafts produced, unit cost $737 million, program cost $44.75 billion.

Initial procurement of 132 aircraft was planned in the mid-1980s, but was later reduced to 75. 21 were finally built. The Congress didn`t approve aditional funds for buying more, due to the costs.

Anybody see some similarities?

well they still have 187 F22 approved and payed for.

The move is to make more money for F-35, which are in greater need now. They have to replace a shitload of F-16 from AF and ANG

I see a similarity between Gorbachev and the World Crisis, as causes for cutting budgets! But 21 B2's are a good force to be reckoned with... wink.gif

Gorbachev had no other choice, as the military expenditure of the SU in the late 80ies was around 40% of the state budget.

i'll be curious to see the price tag development for the F35, as the congress announced last year that the entire program will cost around 1 trillion (USD).

"we" however, didn't even decide what to purchase, an ongoing "decisionmaking process" since 2003.

No, I actually meant that Gorby's policy was a reason for US to finally cut down their defense budget. One trillion dollars? The figure alone is scarying - they could almost buy Africa with those money...
1.000.000.000.000 USD.

Could it be real? Will we find out soon? What F-16 (what block, that is...) will be "the one"?

It is possible to get second-hand block 52 aircraft, but even block 40/42 will be adequate.
If that article is correct, they made the right choice, substance over style.

We shall find out til mid-november or so, as the "Lider Maximo" could use some good news in campaign smile.gif This depends, however, on what type(s) of F 16's are the USAF willing to scrape out... ah... sell to their allies, I meant... And this "detail" we won't find out until then, too.
