He is still the commander in chief of the army. So what if he made the choice? His "brave" and "intelligent" underlings were unable to come to a decision, so someone had to make the choice. Radu |

Well deal the has not been signed yet, however 2 factors may have forced his decision economic depression and massive diplomatic pressure from US! This post has been edited by Stephen Dabapuscu on September 11, 2009 01:41 pm |

2020? Highly unlikely. Try 2050-2060 or whenever the first second-hand F-35s become available. -------------------- I

his "brave" underlings were asking actually for the Gripen. the army was asking for the Gripen and from that article, so was Tariceanu. and since el presidente is working on the establishment of his political dynasty, he's going to be shmoozing with the americans. this is supposed to be a parlamentary decision, as long el marinero is not paying for the aircraft from his own pocket. there is an institution called MAPN, which has just been rendered obsolete. the (typically) wrong part of this process is not that it will be a F-16 block whatever. it's the fact that it turned out to be a Louis XIV decision completley ignoring the army request. and F-35 will be bought the day after the release of "Duke Nukem Forever". |

There is no F-16 deal yet. I have read that Romania is considering buying 24 Mirage 2000 C-9s; that the UAE is returning to Dassault as part of the UAE's Refale buy! This sounds like a much better deal! Viva la Mirage-2000!

The C-9 were delivered to UAE starting with 2003. This is a better option than F-16 from the eighties. Just the price is to see how it looks, if it`s starting to happen. For sure no offset deals also in this case...

there must be some sort of a contest "how to get the worst possible deal".

True most likey no offsets with this deal. However Romania was not going to be geting any offsets for the used F-16 deal! And the Mirage 2000 C-9 is much better then old F-16's block 25/32! This post has been edited by Stephen Dabapuscu on September 22, 2009 06:40 pm |

If it were up to me the Romanian AF would already be flying JAS-39 Gripens, but the Dassault Mirage 2000 C-9's built this decade are a much better choice then F-16 block 25/32's built in the 80's. Which the American's admit won't last a decade! |

Why can't Romania buy new F-16s? I know they're more expensive, but worth it in the long run when you figure the cost of maintenance, overhaul, safety issues etc.

Romania was considering a 50/50 buy; of 24 F-16 block 52 and 24 block 25/32 before the world wide recession hit last year! |

actually they are not. new F-16 C/D block50/52+ should be around 22 million flyaway. we get "refurbished" aiframes which would be "modernized" to block50/52(?) standards (the offer contains some "+" elements) for 20.7 million apiece (newspaper quote). which beats the Morocco deal, who got 24 F-16 C/D block 50/52+ for 223 million, which is less than 10 million apiece. all prices in USD. according to rumors the US refused JDAM compatibility, which would mean block 30 configuration actually, but the offer contained the block50/52+ radar and since even a non-NATO country got that configuration, i don't belive that's true. almost as bad is the reduction from 48 to 24 airframes which is the bare minimum accepted by NATO for RO. This is a mere 2 squadrons, and even those are with a number of trainers, I presume (maybe 20+4?). You can barely make "air police" with those numbers. If the Sukhoys will come in a dark night...

New F-16's are flyaway cost is more 50-60 million, but with the deals the US has been giving lately its more like 90-100 million. Also Morocco payed more 2.4 billion for its 24 f-16's, the 223 is just Mavericks, ECM pods etc....... This post has been edited by Stephen Dabapuscu on September 22, 2009 07:41 pm |

with 90-100 million it would beat the price of an EF.
the weapons deal was 160 million you might want to contradict this: http://www.upi.com/Security_Industry/2008/...85161212810644/ |
