I agree with Imperialist, and I also express my opinion about it. I do not think that for the sake of tradition is really necessary for Romania to have air and sea forces, without the ability to properly equip them. Being in a military alliance -NATO-, forces specialization principle can work very well, so we should focus on the military forces that we can afford, equipping them properly. If these forces consisting of infantry, mountain troops, paratroopers and special forces, for instance, then limit ourselves to them, equipping and instructing them properly. Equipping of such light and mobile forces, that does not raise costs we can not allow, can bring us to a specialization in perspective within NATO, with obvious benefits for all parties (us, the Alliance). The idea is not mine obviously, being discussed in the military since the admission of Romania in NATO. |

I did not compare anyone to Israel. I mentioned Israel in reply to your "we do not need second hand aircraft" comment, by whicn you actually mean "we do not need F-16". You said that Israel have tye money to buy any aircraft they want. They chose the F-16. I do not need to be convinced that the F-16 is a good aircraft, but to me this is an ringing endorsement. So, if we don't "need" a replacement for the MiG 21's, perhaps there should have been another box to "tick" in the poll: "no airplane at all", and then we retire ALL of our pilots and eventually disband TAROM and ROMAVIA as well! This is extreme, but it's just the extrapolation of the "no planes" theory! Anyway, we'll get a pretty small number of planes, eventually - be they F16 or other type.
As for the "forumists" issue, it's just a(nother) way to defuse the tension and the debate; of course, irrelevant for the "higher circles", the decision factors. It would be great, however, if those factors above-mentioned would really have our nationak interest as the main focus! -------------------- M

That's a bit of a stretch. What, only fighter jet pilots are good for TAROM? What about those flying the Spartans, the Hercules and the Soim? -------------------- I

1. I already wrote "this is extreme", didn't I? This is a "worst case scenario"...
2. The fighter pilots are the top(gun) of the pilots, military, civilian etc. 3. What's the life-span of Hercules, Iar-99 Soim and so on? When are we going to have to change them, too? What then? -------------------- M

This should have been an option in the poll too, the MIG 400:

New ideas?!
Although the upcoming elections might change some of the figureheads, I doubt there'll be a substantial change! This post has been edited by MMM on September 06, 2012 02:39 pm -------------------- M

The europeans are not so happy for giving the cash to the americans, without even making a proper bid. |

Well, does it matter we don't have them? (money, that is...) Anyway, the issue of which planes should we get seeems to have been closed, at least in the "higher" levels. Or is it just my oppinion? -------------------- M

That is my feeling too. We shall get SH F-16, which in the end we shall use for the next 20-30 years because, of course, a contry like us will never have +200 millions dolars to use for one F-35.
