I would suggest that anybody who recommend a unit as "the best", or as his preferred, to mention some reasons - for those who don't know the reason.

I would suggest the Romanian mountain units who were in Caucasus Mountains (and before and after that, in Crimea).
Sentimental reason: my grandfather was with them.
Logical reason: they were the ones to reach the furthest advanced position in Soviet Union for the Axis, and later, when most of the other Romanian units were back to Romania, they were still far away in the East - in Crimea.
After August 1944, the Romanian mountain units were the first to cross the border imposed by the Vienna Treaty.
To make a joke, of course the best regiment was were my grandfather did his service. Seriously, I do not see what mountain regiment should be selected as the best.

IMHO in reality there are to many variables to be taken into account.

1. Family connection with Unit.

2. Types of unit, Infantry, Cavalry, Airforce & Navy.

3. Area of operations and campaigns.

4. Time of year.

5 Equipment used.

6. Allied to or working with Foreign Units.

7. Quality and competence of the Officers.

8. Detailed analysis of their battles and strategy used in campaigns.

To try and single out any unit to be classed as the best, reflects poorly on the effort and sacrifice of all involved in the war, after all, it was not a game like soccer.
And no one Unit ever operated on its own, behind it, were numerous support units to keep it supplied in the field and in action.

WWII was a long conflict and attrition was high in most of the units involved. The quality of the troops decreased as the war progressed, even in the mountain troops. Furthermore, war isn't a contest, but a fight for survival, as much as the regular soldier is concerned. It is pointless to try to find a "best unit".

Better mention the deeds you think make a certain unit stand out and this could actually turn into an interesting discussion.

Personally, I consider the action of the mixed German-Romanian detachment who cut the withdraw of Soviet forces toward Kerci, in 1942, as one of the most remarkable actions involving a small Romanian unit. The Soviet troops who tried to withdraw outnumbered this detachment many times (10:1?...20:1?...), and yet they not succeeded to pass through, and then they surrendered.

From another point of view, a remarkable action was the attack with obsolete I.A.R.-80 planes on 10 June 1944, resulting in the destruction of many of the more modern planes P-38.

For me ,this Regiment who is part of 11 Division ,is a better choice because he fight in many place .For example :Basarabia ,Crimeea,Stalingrad ,Moldova 44 ,Oarba de Mures ,Ungaria ,Muntii Tatra etc .
Also ,battle of Stalingrad who was the bloodiest battle in human history,[B] battle of Crimeea and others is some reason who I like this Regiment and Division .
But many man died is this war ,and they is for me bravely soldiers .

My favourite unit is 3rd Dorobanti "Olt" Regiment, from 11th Infantry Division which fought also in east and west. The 11th Division is the division who never lost a fight smile.gif
My reason: I served in 21 Infantry Battalion " Traian Mosoiu which continued the traditions of 3rd Dorobanti "Olt" Regiment biggrin.gif

Actually the 3rd Dorobanti Regiment had a very poor performance on 18 August 1941 at Karpova, during the combined assault with the 1st Tank Regiment, resulting in the loss of many tanks and trained crews, which were left alone against the numerous Soviet tank hunters. Practically most of the regiment retreated without order and in panic. As a result the regiment's CO was fired.

ocoleanui, the 11th Infantry Division never set foot in Crimea. You are confusing it with the 10th probably.

biggrin.gif I said that the division never lost a fight, not the regiment.
And, actually, the regiment wasn't defeated at Karpova, the tankers were, LOL smile.gif
Cos the regiment was not present on the field.

Just kidding and making "haz de necaz".

Many good men died that day. Not a very funny situation.

The subject, as others already said, is too abstract. You can`t call a regiment"the best of all" until you have a criteria that makes them comparrable( ex. one cavalry regiment isn`t comparrable to a infantry one, hope you understand what i mean.)

generalul Constantin Bădescu: „Divizia 11 infanterie a fost Divizia care n-a cunoscut înfrângerea. A fost marea unitate care n-a pierdut nicio bătălie în sectoarele ce i-au fost încredinţate“.

Divizia 10 Infanterie. A regular division made of regular people that fought on from 1941 to 1944 without making a fuss but always ensuring the job was well done.

Cheers
