Romanian aviation markings

Hi ,

I am interesting to know when (year, possibly date) Romania put the national flag on the tail of their aircraft and also roundels under the wings?

John Cochrane; Stuart Elliott, Military Aircraft Insignia of the World, Naval Institute Press: Annapolis (United States), 1998 sais that:

- Between 1913 and 1915 the roundel (from inside-out) was yellow, blue and red. The tail had the same colors, from inside out.
- Between 1915 and 1941 the roundel (from inside-out) was blue, yellow and red. The tail had the same colors, from inside out.

I don't know what to say about the first statement, but I hope this message answers your question.

many thanks for Your kind reply. I saw some topic in this forum about romanian roundels and some members suspect of the position of color in the period 1913-1915. They think in that period yellow circle were also central like and therefore divided blue and red aereas, like later (and present) romanian roundel. What do You think?

I think the roundel was blue-yellow-red from the beginning. But I don't know for shure, maybe some other books might confirm or infirm this.

Indeed in some old pictures it looks like yellow was in the middle - see below.

But isn't this due to the ortocromatic films used back than - which were sensitive to blue and rendered this color much lighter than it really was? When this technology was used, early film actresses wore blue makeup and lipstick, because the usual red would look very dark, almost black on film.

So can anybody shed some definitive light on this?

The Rumanian cockade was blue (inside)-yellow-red (outside) from the very beginning, inspired by the French national markings. Only the type of film used back then made light blue look light and golden yellow look dark - just as depicted in the above photos.

However, some French-origin aircraft in W.W. 1 flown in Rumania did retain the French roundel, without the white mid-circle being overpainting with yellow.

In those two pictures are Russian aircraft.

I think you are right, I've seen many pictures of the Romanian flag back then, which have the same problem. So John Cochrane and Stuart Elliott might have been fooled by this little technical detail. It was illogical anyway.

C'mon, those are certainly Rumanian aircraft. You may ask Horia, the photos' owner.

C-mon. Those aircraft have romanian cockades. In flight is an Breguet 14 over Brasov in 1921, an the crashed one is a MAG Fokker D VII captured by Romanian Army during 1919.

Those are Romaian aircraft. As already pointed out, the reason why the colours look odd because the photos were taken with orthochromatic film. Google "orthochromatic vs panchromatic" for more info.
