If I am not mistaken, that paintjob was introduced around the time of the Kosovo-conflict embargo on Serbia. NATO embargo enforcers were stationed in a few places along the Danube, including Galati, in order to prevent shipments to Serbia via de Danube. Maybe they had to be painted in a way that was more recognisable to the NATO enforcers so that they could differentiate between rogue and legitimate vessels? I have no evidence of that, just a supposition...

Hi Radu
I knew that Shanghai II is not the boat you are looking for . these boats waren't in service in 1980. Try the links below ,I'm not sure but I think that there is a likeness http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/comm...orpedo_boat.JPG http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Ko...o_boat_rear.JPG or here : http://henk.fox3000.com/Aer2.htm http://en.akella.com/News.aspx?id=546 http://www.warboats.org/soviet.htm You can find others . |

Hi d1ragos,
I knew it was not the Komsomolets almost as soon as I wrote it. Everything is different. I know the Komsomolets reasonably well. BTW, there is a Komsomolets in the open air display of the Maritime Museum in Constanta. The only thing that may link these boats is that they may be in the same ballpark dimensionally. I have a a couple more photos of the veGhe, but all of them are like this one, taken with a telephoto lense. The photo of the boat that I posted above was found in the background of another photo - I had to scan it and then enlarge it. What I would like to find out is some info, drawings, class/NATO classification, anything. Radu |

Hi Radu
You can ask Politia de Frontiera about , they have a "Petitii , sesizari , reclamatii si informatii publice" section on theyr menu and as long as these boats are no longer in service maybe they can give you all the info you are looking for. Anyway , if I'll have new info about that I I'll let you knew |

What's that marking on the ship (wide red, then narrow yellow and blue)? Is like the Romanian Army Roundel, only for coast guard ships? |

It is the Romanian tricolour. The Romanian flag is blue, yellow and red (blue at the mast). Radu |

Of course it's the Romanian flag, I'm Romanian . The Romanian flag has a 2:3 proportion, with equal stripes. I was talking about this particular marking: WIDE red and NARROW yellow and blue stripes.

As Denes pointed out above, the Romanian Coast Guard are trying to imitate the colour scheme of the US Coast Guard - see the USCG banner here http://www.uscg.mil/
Other Romanian Coast Guard vessels are painted in the same manner. Radu |

Interesting boat!
The weirdest thing is why there is a Ju87 showing up instead of the photo I posted initially? Here it goes again. Radu Uploaded with ImageShack.us |

No, these two photos above show VD 141 river minesweepers, which belong to the Navy. What radub posted just before you is different, just look closely at the photos.
Looks like it's armed with german 20mm WW2 vintage guns... And here's another image of the VG ship: |

Very interesting photos.
The first time I saw one of these boats was around late 70s-early 80s in Tatanir on the Chilia arm of the Delta where there was a borderguards station. My father was a good friend of the harbour master's (Mosh Antosha) and we spent some holidays there where we stayed in the house of the mooring pontoon. These boats used to come in and moor at the pontoon. I remember that it was painted in camouflage colours and I went on board a number of times. The engines were amazingly loud and the engine room was tiny and hot. Very fast! Basically, I would love to build a model of it and ideally a set of drawings would be most helpful. Are these a Romanian design or are they imported? Do they have a NATO name? Radu |
