I remember that some time ago I have seen a photo of a cock named Costica that was said to be the mascot of the crew of SM-79 no. 221.

Cpt. av. Ion "Oita" Popescu was probably one of the most famous Romanian Savoia pilot. He was the CO of the 75th Bomber Squadron in 1941 and operated from August on JRS-79s (the Jumo powered twin-engine version). He and his squadron knocked out an important Soviet ammunitions dump in September, near Odessa.

If I remember right from a book written by Constantin C. Gheorghiu (maybe "Aripi in furtuna / Wings in the storm"?), some of these Savoia Marchetti were manufactured under licence at SET, in Bucharest. Were all of the Savoia Marchetti used by the Romanians manufactured at SET, or some of them were imported from Italy, or all of them were made in Italy? Florin |

If I remember right, there was a first batch of planes that were imported from Italy, but then the planes were manufactured in Romania under licence. For the latter batches there were some modifications to the front of the plane, but I do not know if this was a purely Romanian project or not. There was also a change to the engines used for the latter models of the planes.

There were two types imported from Italy:
S-79B: K14 (radial engine) verison JIS-79B: Jumo 211 D (inline engine) version. The types manufactured in Romania by IAR Brasov were JRS-79b and JRS-79B1 PS: J=Jumo R=Roman I=Italian |

an interesting article about two SM 79 pilots was published in two numbers (107/108 ??) of the French magazine "aviation". The article is signed by C Craciunoiu, thow more than a quarter are the memoirs of sublocotenenti (at that time)/ (2nd leutenants) Hladiuc and Constantinciu
For interested persons i can scan those pages and send it to you. Mr Hladiuc in Bucharest. I met another savoist and henkelist (?? ) Mr Popescu at Ghencea cimetery in august 2003. He lives in Sinaia and if interested i can give you his adress. Regards, bm |

We have Mr. Hladiuc on tape, but it will take some time before we will be able to write the interview down.
