I am finally able to start a project building an IAR 80 or 81 model but would like to build one with the extended wing for greater wing area. Could anyone help please with any pictures or profiles of any of these aircraft, the more the better! From what reference material I have I can see that serial numbers 181-230 and 291-300 had this wing, but several others also had the greater span, can anyone please tell me which serial numbers. Thank you all very much.

With a bit more searching I have managed to find a link to an article, which may actually be in this site, detailing IAR 80/81 model designation, dimensions and serial number range. Strangely I cant find this article when I search the forum.
From what I can find then IAR80B 181-230 IAR80C 241-290 IAR81A 291-300 and IAR81C 301-450 all had 11m wingspan. This certainly increases my options for a suitable subject but I would still be interested in any pictures or profiles of any aircraft with personal or distinctive markings.

Is that wire above the plane the radio antenna?! Were they using AM transmissions?

Yes, it is the antena. Standard those day was short waves, AM transmissions. This requires this type of antena, normally made in lenght of quarter of the wavelenght. You can find a similar type of natena on others aircrafts, like Me-109, Mustang etc. Some of the russian planes don`t have it, not because of better technology, but it`s because they didn`t have radio at all. wink.gif

Thanks Cantacuzino, Great profiles, exactly the sort of thing I am looking for. The last 81C profile shows an aircraft with large yellow triangular markings, do you know the relevance of these, and are they anything to do with the blue triangular markings on drawings of 81C serial number 320.
Also Cantacuzino, is there please any chance of you posting some pictures of your radio control IAR 80 serial 123 you built, actually in the air. Must be a fantastic sight! By the way, you are right with the scale, 1/5 like yours gives very good dimensions for a model. I have now switched to 1/5 and am using profili software to design the wings with Selig profiles as used in the Topflite P47. My progress will be slow but I will keep you updated. Thanks again.

The 6th fighter group was made of 3 squadrons: 59sq, 61sq and 62sq. Each squadron had 3 sections of 4 planes.
This kind of markings ( triangles ) were used by 6th FG to make distinction between each squadron. Regarding your question, IAR 81 C no 320 was flown by Lt Dumitrescu (section leader and 61sq. leader) and the planes from his squadron had 2 triangles (as seen in a picture).
The IAR 81C no 369 was flown by Lt Limburg from 62 sq. and his plane had 3 triangles and most probably all planes from 62sq should have the same 3 triangles.
The thirst squadron (59sq) most probably had 1 triangle.
The color of this triangles were not for sure indentified but it could be different for each squadron : yellow, red and blue.
Another specific markings for 6th FG were the squadrons leader and section leader I.D.
These were the big white angles (reversed angle) for the section leaders and a big white triangle for squadron leader.

From the pictures (I have seen) the below list with IAR 81 c from 6th FG marks:

IAR 81C no 320 : 2 triangles (61sq) and a big triangle (squadron leader)
IAR 81C no 321 : 2 triangles (61sq) and a big angle (section leader)
IAR 81C no 343 : 2 triangles (61sq) and a big angle (section leader)
IAR 81C no 329 : 2 triangles (61sq)
IAR 81C no 369 : 3 triangles (62sq)
IAR 81C no 336 : 3 triangles (62sq)

Sorry, you misunderstood, I start to built an IAR 81 C 1/5 scale ( not an IAR 80 no 123).
I have pictures only for the 50 % work in progress (posted on the romanian forum rhc.ro) but I will be glad to help/assist you in building your own flying IAR 81C RC model. Just sent me a PM with your e-mail adress.

Dear Cantacuzino,Thank you again for yet another precise answer to my forum questions. I can imagine that perhaps the same blue or yellow paint as in your national insignia could have been available and may well have been used for the section triangular markings. This really is interesting, thanks. Is there any information regarding stencil markings on these aircraft, I have studied the stencils used on ARR bf109s and presume they would be quite similar.
Sorry for the mix up with the identity of your model aircraft, its just that I cant read the forum so assumed the model was yours.

Oups, unsure.gif Sorry I made some important changes in my early statement regarding 6th FG ID markings after studing more carefully the pictures and 6th FG inventory.

I couldn't find a specific stencil information for IAR 80-81. But for sure are different as on ARR Bf 109.
The stencils on romanian Bf 109 are in fact a translation from german to romanian language.
From the pictures were some of them indentified:
Ulei = oil ( written in a small triangle near the oil tank hatch)
87 = fuel ( written in a small triangle near fuel inlet)
mitraliere =machine guns (written on wing guns hatch)
cartuse= gun shells (written on wing amunition hatch)
