My grandmother, may God rest her in peace, told me that she eyewitnesed an air atack run by Stuka's in her native village, Halmagiu, Arad county, against russian troops moving on the road from Brad to Ineu. The russians suffered very heavy casualties as they had no AA in the area. The atack was carried out sometime in autumn of 1944.
Can one identify which Stuka unit atack that russians and how apreciated the germans the results of the bombing? |

It must be an attack by Schlachtgeschwader 2 "Immelmann (known as Gefechtsverband Rudel) ,
During 08.44 - 22.9.44 unit was stationed at airfield Görgenyaroszfalu, Hungary. Equiped with Ju 87 and Fw 190 . III./SG 2 still use the obsolete Ju-87D and few G See the link below http://www.ww2.dk/oob/bestand/schlacht/biiisg2.html This post has been edited by Cantacuzino on January 05, 2009 10:21 pm |

Görgényoroszfalu is actually in Northern Transylvania (Solovăstru in Rumanian, Weichseldorf in German), located in the former Maros-Torda (Mures-Turda) county. However, the Stuka unit's next air base, at Szilágynagyfalu (in Rumanian Nuşfalău), located in North-Western Transylvania, was even closer to Arad. It largely depends on the date your Grandmother witnessed the described events. Gen. Dénes This post has been edited by Dénes on January 06, 2009 06:47 am |

I cant remember unfortunatelly the exact dat, but I know a somehow similar atack about 15 km away, in a village in vicinity of Halmagiu, in Avram Iancu. There was stationed a great number of russian troops on the valley and 2 fighter airplanes came from direction of Ineu, machine gunned the russians and fled away. The incoming direction is sure, I know it from my uncle who showed me the direction. Russian casualties were 18 wounded.
The Stukas came in Halmagiu from the same direction. Can be verified if there was an atack carried by Stukas on Sunday in that area? I imagine that the area of Halmagiu, having no industry, was bombed only because russian was moving there and giving the fact that the local people doesnt mention other atacks, this one might be the only one made with Stuka. Russian casualties (some hundreds) from Halmagiu were burried in the village and were the only russian casualties in this particular village during ww2. There were no ground combat in the village in ww2. |
