Hy, the mission to bomb Brasov took place at 6 mai 1944. It was part of a biger campayn made in that period. IN that mission americans lost tow aircraft shotdown by lt. av BAlta Constantin piloting a Iar 81. One was shotdown near the town of Topoloveni and another near the vilage of Suslanesti. 12 americans where captured in the aria. I leave not far away form Suslanesti when I have the time I will go in the aria to speak with the locals maybe I find mare information. You can find mare information at the site aviatori.ro

I believe the image above is from 16 April, but what difference does it makes? The new part of Brasov was in ruins.

Should we make a difference between bombing the city of Braşov and bombing the plane factory situated next to the town? Which one was it?

The picture above represents the bombing of Brasov i believe. Anyway, IAR was not that far away from the city.

As far as I know, Braşov was not considered a target for the allies. But being close to Ploieşti region - voila! I'm not sure, but I guess they tried high altitude bombing, right?

Brasov was considered important target for his important Marshalling Yard, and the IAR factory where started the Bf-109 G production. From reports of two BG, 15thAF: 449 BG, Narrative Report No. 55 Date: 6 May 1944 Target: Brasov, Rumania, Marshalling Yard. ...Today we flew against Brasov to attack buildings on the edge of the airdrome. The attack was successful and we had no losses.... 2nd BG, BRASOV, ROMANIA - MISSION NO. 193 - MAY 6, 1944 ....Lt. Col. Donald H. Ainsworth led 33 aircraft and dropped their bombs on the Aircraft Factory in Brasov. The target was well covered and only one E/A made one pass at the first plane over the target. Flak at the target varied from slight to intense. One B-17, #42-32022, 96th Squadron, failed to return.... |

It may look as a coincidence but bombing in Ester day was/is a normal practice for US bombers. Below a 15th AF armourers painting the bombs like ester eggs. Source: http://hey_moe.tripod.com/451planes.html |

Not only IAR factory was bombed, but also civilians near the oil refinery. Some of the bombs hit Villa Kertsch, which was in the center of the city.
