I found these images of a secret german design, the Blohm & Voss Bv 141
a "twin boom" design with the engine one one side, compensating for the weight of the cockpit on the other...

These actions portraid here in these images probably never took place, but it would have been interesting to see how the Romanian Pilots would have performed if the war had lasted a little longer and these "secret weapons" would have reached the Romanian airforce as well...

The asymmetrical Blohm&Voss BV 141 was not a secret project, it actually existed and was manufactured in small series for the Luftwaffe. It was never in ARR service.
This topic was already discussed on my forum, about a year ago:

Hi,

I just admired the photos of the asymmetrical Blohm&Voss BV 141.

I know I am not an aeronautical engineer, but design ideas for small size, small speed airplanes was a hobby since my days as student.
I don?t see any spectacular improvement in this model. To don?t say I don?t see any advantage at all. I am talking about aerodynamics and drag.
The only advantages that may result are:
1. better visibility from cockpit
2. the ability of firing the weaponry without aiming through the helix circle
This second matter was already managed by the Me109 model with the co-axial 30 mm canon through the helix hub. (It was still through the ?circle?, but without harming the helix.)

Do you want to admire a real cool design using the classic motor and helix?
What about the only canard airplane to be produced as prototype and tested in WWII, the Japanese Kyushu J7W Shinden?
The color image is shown in The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Military Aircraft ? 1914 to the Present, by Enzo Angelucci. My edition is a translation in English published by Chartwell Books in 2001. The original Italian version was published in 1980, 1990, 2000 by Arnoldo Mondadori S.p.A, Milan.
Ok, in my English translation that canard Japanese fighter is shown at page 207, with a very short explanation at page 240.
The prototype made a 45 minutes flight on August 3rd, 1945.

Hello guys,

The Internet is such a wonderful thing!

You don't have to buy that encyclopedia to admire that Japanese canard.

Just enter in www.google.com

and type

Kyushu J7W Shinden

You'll get much more than from that encyclopedia (I am talking about this fighter, and not the whole book.)

Regards,
Florin

although the bv 141 was aysimetrical it was not supose to be more aerodynamic. The plane was arigonaly designed to be a reconecence aircraft. If the cockpit is off to the side you get better visibility and more camaras can be placed in the plane. Also less armour i srequired because engie fires are less hasardous. The gremans canceled the design 1943 because of its "ugliness". Blohm & Voss decided to show its potential and mounted a jet engine on the fusaloge and a radial in the cabin area. THis design was said to rival with a me 262 in performance. biggrin.gif
