Now on eBay: photo showing a smoke generator in action in Ploieşti on 1 August 1943. Can someone provide a translation of the text on the back of the photo?

Also on eBay, a set of photos showing damage from the 1 August 1943 attack on Ploieşti. Some of the photos appear to have been taken on the day of the attack, but most of them were taken in the following day.

QUOTE (Carol I @ Jul 1 2005, 08:17 PM)
Can someone provide a translation of the text on the back of the photo?

On the first photo it is written (in blue colour): "Ploiesti, Romania. Fogging of the city before the air attack of the Americans"
second one: "The burning refineries and oil tanks"
last one: "the blown up ..." (I can't read the last two words)

Bye!

This is a very rare German snapshot photo of the Brewery Wagon after it was shot down following a fatal hit on the navigator and bombardier section of the nose of the bomber while on the OPERATION TIDAL WAVE August 1, 1943 "Black Sunday" raid over Ploesti, Romania.  This bomber is identifiable by what remains of the nose art as a B-24D-25-CO belonging to the 9th Air Force, 376th Bomb Group, 512th Bomb Squadron.  Tail number was (4)1-24294.

This photo shows the port side waist gunner position, with the raised beer mugs and "GESUNDHEIT!" and the name of the gunner "Mickey".  Note the yellow ring around the star, used in 1942 and into 1943 on some aircraft.

The nose art is a bit indistinct, but features the bust of a blonde girl on a red and white stripes and blue chief air corps shield.

This is a difficult angle shot to determine the exact identity of the plane, however, it was one of the planes shot down by JG4 on the August 1st Ploesti raid.

The bomber shown is the HELEN B. HAPPY, tail number 42-40764, a Consolidated B-24D-95-CO Liberator that was assigned to the 44th Bomb Group on the same raid as the Brewery Wagon. It was hit by a 37mm round during the mission, injuring both waist gunners. Her actions are described here.

Wrong indentification.

The first , second and third picture are from "Boiler Maker II". The angle of the plane, the cornfield and sand color camo leaves no doubt.

Only the forth picture( the german guy in the cockpit) is from "Brewery Wagon" (green camo).

Thanks Cantacuzino for the update. The identification of the planes has not been done by me, but by the seller of the photos.
