I hope to find somebody, who knows details about this subject(Details on occupation/eliberation of Oradea,1944 oct.12.)I am very intrested on informations about the proposed blowing up of the bridge,in the city center.Because there is a problem with a memorial plaquett, placed on the wall of Szt.Laszlo church ,near the bridge. This memorial is probably false, because it speaks about heroes who defended the bridge against "hitlerist" forces in retreat, who wanted to destroy the bridge. But I have totally contradictory informations. So who is able to help with new informations, please write here.

The unit that fought inside the city was the Tudor Vladimirescu Division. The city was surrounded on 12 October, so blowing up the bridge would not make much sense.

Oradea (in Hungarian Nagyvárad, in German Großwardein) was taken by Soviet troops of the 6th Cavalry Army Corps and the 6th Guards Tank Army on October 12, 1944. The Tudor Vladimirescu Division was probably attached to one of the above units.
The city was defended by German and Hungarian units, the latter being the 4th and 12th Divisions. I have no details of the planned destruction of the mentioned bridge. What is the story/stories you know? |

Im from Oradea. I saw that plaque too and there is write that a few citizens from Oradea (Nagyvárad - becouse those names (from memorial plaque) - are almost all or maybe all hungarians) fought against "hitlerists" (?) who was trayed to blow up the main bridge of Oradea (just near of the city hall). This is what i can understand from that plaque .. the real story ? .. i really don t know (nem tudom :keep: ) This post has been edited by Dan Po on January 12, 2005 12:08 pm |

I see that this is an old subject, and I also saw that Dan Po is from Oradea, but I dont know were that plaque is! I never saw it in my life! Can anyone from Oradea to post a picture with it? I also never heard about the story of blowing up any bridge in Oradea by germans or hungarians...nor the plan(s) for this kind of action during liberation of Oradea. I'd like to know some details, please. This post has been edited by 21 inf on July 09, 2007 06:17 pm |
