Alex, The Vanatori were "rifle" regiemnts, the other Infantry being called Dorobanţi and Infanteria. The Rosiori were one of the two names for the Cavalry Regiments, the other being Calaraşi.

Actually, "Vanatori" were mountain troops; infantry, yes, but mountain infantry. Later, at the beginning of WWII, as part of the armored division there were regiments of "Vanatori Moto", which were basically motorised infantry. No link, however, to the Hungarian Army...

M, I'm sorry they were not Mountain Infantry, two of the regiments were in the Guards Division and two others were motorised for the Armoured Division. The Mountain Infantry were not organised in Regiments but in Battalions and you won't find the Vanatori Regiments in any of the Mountain formations either the Brigades or the Divisions.

The term "Vanatori" was an honorific bestowed on certain leg infantry, mountain, and motorized infantry regiments, dating from the mid-19th century.
In Western terms, it can be equated to the terms "Rifle" or "Jäger." By WWI, and during WWII, this term was an honorific only, with no reflection on the unit's organization, or equipment. The terms "Rosiori" and "Calarasi" were honorifics used by cavalry regiments. During the 19th century, the terms were used to distinguish the difference between regular ("Rosiori") and volunteer (or militia)("Calarasi") cavalry units. There is no real translation for these terms in English. Again, by WWI, and during WWII, these terms were honorifics only, with no reflection on the unit's organization, or equipment, with the exception that, during WWII, the "Rosiori" units were initially filled with a ratio of 75% active troops, and 25% reservists, while the "Calarasi" units were composed of 25% active troops, and 75% reservists.
