Disregard the writing on the back, it's just the number of the photo or something, other photos in the album had also numbers like 17, 19 etc

If you would bother to follow the link I posted, you would notice that the nautical miles measurement ends at Galati. After Galati, going upstream, it's in kilometers. This is probably due to the fact that the "sea-going Danube" (Dunarea maritima) ends about there. I suspect the "Sea-going Danube" was even shorter during WW2. |

The wreck looks very much line an Il-4 (a.k.a DB-3F).
The location is without a doubt Tulcea. The photo was taken from across the Danube, looking towards the city (most likely location in Google Earth, somewhere around Long. 45°11'34.89"N / Lat. 28°48'21.62"E). You can see a hill in the background. That is called Dealul Monumentului and at the top there is a monument called Monumentul Independentei erected after the War of Independence - this monument can be seen faintly in the picture. In the mid-nineties I worked for a summer with a UN-backed medical project in the Danube Delta and I lived in an apartment on the waterfront. Places along that shore were used as a beach by the locals (as well as us), so that view is quite familiar. HTH Radu |

The wreck is now beyond doubts this of a DB-3B or DB-3F
and if crash site can be confirmed as Tulcea then matches the date of a 40 BAP bomber which departed Sarabuz or Karagoz naval air station lost at Tulcea due to flack and air to air activity. The plane was lost on 21.7.1941. Entire crew was listed KIA This post has been edited by yugit on December 01, 2011 09:54 am |

i suspect this guy of faking the writting on the picture. I think is a ball pen with ink, and the writting i saw on many pictures. On other hand...german ww2 pictures i've seen were written on back. Here other pic with the same writting. http://www.ebay.de/itm/Kubelwagen-Pkw-Kfz-...=item56474ae9cb This post has been edited by seeker on December 02, 2011 06:57 am |

Well..what would be fake about them if the location is confirmed ? Indeed there are not many pisc overwritten with a marker but they might aswell been adnotated in the recent years.

Nah! You can see that it is written with a fountain pen in Prussian Blue ink. The back indicates that the photos were pulled from an album where they were glued firmly, that is why the writing is on the front just like in many other albums of that time. Looks "real" to me. In any case, "faking" is used to push up prices, not when telling the truth. If the "counterfeiter" had said that the wreck was photographed in, say, Stalingrad, just to make it more "apetising" to gullible buyers, it would make sense to call it a "fake". But the writing seems to be just telling things as they are. Radu |

I don't think the text on the photos is faked, but rather
genuine and this beyond any doubt. Though , Ebay is synonimous for fakes but again I would exclude this case. On a special note, I have other opinions from Rumania which norrowed down the location as Tulcea...and last dilema is if DB-3B or 3F |
