Hello,

I am looking for informations on the Romanian Orbat during the battle for Vulcan Pass (november 1916), especially the hard fight for a small village Valari, (also called Valarii Curpenul in some romanians sources) where the WGB with Rommel was engaged for the first time in Romanian campaign.

I need more precise informations on the romanians forces there, and especially during the counter-attack launched the 12th of november 1916 against Valari.

In my source I have only one romanian infantry division for all the sector, against Kühne Gruppe (4 infantry div and 2 Cavalry div).

Rommel in his book talked about 6 differents romanians regiment, (it is also in the WGB archives) but Romanian's sources said nothing about any reinforcement (and 6 regiments is a bit too much for only one division).

Does anyone can help ?

Thanks a lot.

Hi Cedric,

Regarding Rommel activity in Romania in WWI, you can find details in the documentary movie "Hill 789".

Thank you very much.

But I am asking if this film is dealing about Vulcan's battle or Oituz one, which was not the same.

I have already informations precises on Romanian orbat on the Oituz battle.

But not for the combat for Valarii Curpenul village a year before (november 1916).

And also, is the DVD's had a french version ? wink.gif

QUOTE
On November 11 Group Kühne entered the Szurduk and Vulcan Passes. Facing it were only two Romanian divisions (1st and 11th), as the 9th Army’s feints in other border passes had successfully occupied the enemy’s main forces. Group Kühne, which consequently enjoyed a remarkable superiority in both men and weapons, employed its artillery and shattered the Romanian defenders. During the course of that day, the 41st and 109th Divisions cleared the pass exits, and the 301st and 11th Bavarian, as well as Schmettow’s Cavalry Corps, followed close behind. Roughly 60,000 soldiers and 30,000 horses had advanced through the 40 km pass. By November 14, Group Kühne had established a strong position south of the Szurduk and Vulcan Passes near Targu Jiu. The floodgates were opened.

The attack was launched on November 10. One of the young officers was the future Field Marshal Erwin Rommel. On November 11, then-Lieutenant Rommel led the Württemberg Mountain Company in the capture of Mount Lescului. The offensive pushed the Romanian defenders back through the mountains and into the plains by November 26.

Thank you very much Petre.

I already have this very good work on the decisive role of Rumanian's Campaign on conception of Blitzkrieg (unknown unfortunately, all historians focused wrongly on Riga's Battle, second Marne offenseive and sometimes Caporetto but nothing on Rumanian campaign).

I am in fact looking for informations from :

Constantin Kiritescu, Istoria Razboiului Pentru Intregirea Romaniei 1916-1919 Editura Casei Scoalelor – Bucarest 1922

or

Romania in razboiul mondial 1916-1918, Imprimeria Nationala, vol. I-IV, plus Documente anexe, 4 volumes, Bucuresti, 1934-1946

I know Andréi Razu make a translation of it in english, but I am looking for special informations.

Can anyone help ?

But there is problem as german related that they found bodies from 6 different Rumanian's regiments, and Razu is talking about only 2 coys.

I am looking for informations which can help me to find truth between two differents versions... so different : 2 coys to 6 regts !

I am very happy to see how many people helping me.

Thank you very much for this,

Hello,

Kiritescu mentions two Romanian infantry companies facing the Wuertemburg Alpine Battalion in Valari. The village changed sides three times during the day, until finally the German artillery crushed a fourth Romanian attempt top retake it.

The Romanian troops in the Second Battle of the Jiu consisted of only one brigade from the 1st Division. The counterattack troops that had won the First Battle of the Jiu had returned to their previous positions. The Romanian High Command was expecting the Central Powers to continue their offensive in the Arges Valley and had massed reserves at Pitesti. The attack on the Jiu came as a big surprise.
