Hello friends,

I am asking this question in name of my friend who is doing some research about an Austrian officer who was killed in action during the battle of Ţifeşti on 9th August 1917. Basically he is looking for three things:
1.) a few details about this battle would be great since we hardly have any literature about the Romanian Front 1916-1918
2.) he is looking for any information about the current status of Austro-Hungarian military cemeteries around Ţifeşti (have they survived post-war era, WW2 and communist era?) and
3.) he is looking for any good photo(s) showing the former battlefield at Ţifeşti.

Can anyone help? huh.gif

Thanks in advance.

Best wishes,

Klemen

Look here: http://worldwar2.ro/foto/?id=274§ion=9&article=117

Tifesti is to the east of Sarbi, where the Romanian 13th Infantry Division was.

My wife is from Focsani. Next time we go there I will drive to Tifesti and make some photos. Probably no sooner than May.

Thank you for your reply, Victor. Your help on this is much appreciated. If you could snatch a couple of photos of Tifesti in May it would be just wonderful! laugh.gif biggrin.gif
Thanks in advance!

I believe this is the church.

There were two of them in the village and this was the one on the edge of the ridge of the Putna Valley.

This is the map with the postions of the two churches. I believe the "Tifesti1" church is more likely of a candidate because it was in the back of the Central Powers frontline from the beginning.

This is a cross from the cemetery of the church. It belongs apparently to a priest that died in 1917.

The entrance:

The ridge of the Putna Valley. Somewhere to the left, up on the ridge is the village and the church.

In the background is the Odobesti Mountain/Hill

There isn't much left of the old trenches, because of the vineyards that surround the village:
