I read astory about it once. Does somebody know about this Jumo powered IAR 80 fighter experiment ? smile.gif

The test you are referring to was done on the IAR-80 no. 13, but with a DB-601Aa from a Romanian Bf-109E (no. 4) with the no. 11210. The first flight was on 21 April 1941 and the pilot was Dudu Frim. After take off the vibrations started. He was ordered to abandon the airplane, but he refused and brought it back. Anyway the project was canceled.

In June 1943, the IAR-80 no. 326 was modified to receive a DB-605A (1475 HP). The first flight was made on 29 June 1943. The performance of the airplane improved greatly and an order was issued to Daimler Benz. They, however, refused to take it (apparently they were already overstretched by the Luftwaffe orders).

The confusion with the Jumo/DB engine probably started because the intial IAR-80 project was for the Jumo. Because Junkers could not deliver them, the decision was taken to use the IAR K14 radial engine, at least on teh first batch, but the solution finally stuck.

It was a long ago when I provided the 3-view to the guys in states ( www.rccombat.com ) and they made a well flying kit series of it for R/C aircombat !
I did not find it right away, but I have the story somewhere. This pic was in my old computer and I just placed it on a model enthusiasts server in Finland. I'll check the mag out later. Here is a side view of it...a beauty. :keep: :ro:

There were also attempts to fit the I.A.R. 80 airframe with a Jumo 211 in-line engine, taken from a Savoia 79 (JRS-79B) bomber.

However, I think, the best solution would have been to fit the reinforced airframe with a new generation of I.A.R.-developed radial engine, the I.A.R. 1500, or a BMW 801, which would have looked like this:

Where there any IAR-80s actaully fitted with the Jumo 211? Mr. Cicos and Antoniu did not mention any in their book.

Apparently Radu Manicatide remembered one unnumbered IAR-80 was fitted wit ha Gnome-RHone 1600 HP engine.

See the text in the pic. Just this one specimen.
The Air International 1990 May issue was several pages and had also CUTAWAY in the centerfold..it was a very detailed story..many pages. Lots of 3-views and data of the developement and use in the war. Ploesti oilfield defenders were covered specifically well. 10 pages and the proto pic is the best..it is so clean open cockpit plane as can be. There were also colour pics.

It says that June 10th 1944 26 airworthy IAR80Cs took of ( Escadrile of Grupul 6, Nos 58,61 and 62 ) to intercept 100+ P-38J Lightnings and they shot 24 of them loosing 3 themselves. Lightnings were caught by surprise.
One tough fight.

It was the 59th Fighter Squadron, not the 58th (which was assigned to the 7th Fighter Group) and there were 23 IAR-81Cs, not 26. 14 or less P-38s were actually shot down by the 6th Fighter Group and the airfield AAA, although the pilots claimed 23 (for the story of teh 6th Fighter Group see here http://www.worldwar2.ro/arr/g6vt.htm)

Sorry, but an article written in 1990, does not hold much weight compared to a book published in 2000, with the authors doing some extensive research in the Romanian archives. Who wrote the article?
Btw, the book does not mention any IAR-80 actually fitted with the Jumo 211 engine.

Thanks for the clarification. Yep it says one was fitted with Jumo 211Da.
Unfortunately I have only copies here at the moment in my archives of about 100 WWII fighters, that I have used for making R/C model plans and it does not have the authors name. Certainly it would be in the magazines content page.

IIRC, Mr. Emil Droc, former test pilot at I.A.R. Works, told it to me. I have to check my files at home - currently I am still at work sad.gif

As I mentioned before, although the book on the I.A.R. 80/81 by Messrs. Antoniu & Cicos is an excellent and groundbreaking one, it's not the final word on the topic.

Try uploading them onto a free site instead. For example, http://www.imageshack.us seems to work fine.

I can see only the image from http://www.rccombat.com. If I follow the links for the other three images I only get to a page in Finnish with the message "Sinulla ei ole oikeuksia katsoa tai ladata tätä liitettä" (I have no idea what it means).
