Monuments that no longer exist

[Carol I]

Bucharest then and now gave me the idea of this new topic: Monuments that no longer exist.

The idea is to post here photos of old monuments which existed in the pre-WWII cities of Romania and which were removed/destroyed during the war or when the change in regime/administration took place. It would be interesting to have some information about the authors of the statues, their original locations and the eventual faith of these monuments.

I am referring only to monuments as statuary groups. Other monuments such as buildings (architectural monuments) should be included in a separate topic.

[Carol I]

The monument of Reunited Romania made by Olga Sturza (27 September 1884 - 10 July 1971) and donated to the city of Iaşi on 1 August 1924. It was placed at the foot of Copou hill and inaugurated on 29 May 1927. Shortly after the Soviet troops entered Iaşi in 1944 the monument was hammered beyond recognition. The remains were eventually demolished in 1947.

At the initiative of the municipality of Iaşi, a similar monument was made by Constantin Crenganiş in the late 1990s and was inaugurated on 1 December 1999 in the Nation’s Square in front of the University of Medicine.

[Carol I]

The statue of Gheorghe Gh. Mârzescu (1876-1926) in Iaşi, inaugurated on 27 September 1936 in the Cuza Vodă Square (nowadays 14 December 1989 Square). Member of the National Liberal Party, Mârzescu was considered responsible for actions against both the legionaries and the communists in the 1920s. It may therefore be possible that his statue was dismantled as early as the autumn of 1940, during the legionary rule.

The monument of the Heroes of the Teaching Staff made by Artur Verona (1868-1946) and Ion Jalea (1887-1983). In 1930 it was placed in the Victory Square in Bucharest.

[Carol I]

The statue of King Ferdinand I in Oradea, made by Mihai Kara and inaugurated on 21 November 1924 in the Union Square. Dismantled by the Hungarian authorities in 1940, the pieces were transferred to Beiuş where they degraded in time. On its place it is now the statue of Michael the Brave.

The statue of Queen Maria in front of the theatre in Oradea (in place of the statue of the Hungarian vaudeville author Szigligeti Ede), inaugurated in 1921. Dismantled by the Hungarian authorities in 1940, its place was taken by the statue of Szigligeti Ede (made by Margo Ede in 1912).
