I have scanned the attached photo from a book about
Ploesti written by Gen.Twining in 1945. The photo was
shot by the US OSS mission people in Bucharest when
the Russians and Americans were still allies.

Regarding the photo perhaps some one can identify
the location of the facility in Bucharest and if later
on this type of airplane was used by VVS in the
Hungarian campaign.

Thanks

It looks like the type is a Bf 110 F4. It could be as well used by romanians or by germans before captured by the soviets after 23 august 44.
The letter "A" painted on the nose is a leftover german radiocode ( like "A" from 2Z + AW ). I doubt that there were used on hungarian front.
The location possible Otopeni where was the former Bf 110 german base or possible Targsor airfield due to the fact that a soviet fighter regiment was stationed there after 23 august 44.

Thank you and you helpped me to progress towards an other
discovery. I went through my research material and discoverd
that through the end of 1944 Targusorul Nou airfield was used
by the VVS 83rd GIAP which was operating Spits and Hurricanes
and were on their way back through Sokologornie/Crimea to their
original home base.

At Targusorul the Soviets were most probably performing
Intel on captured AAR and Luftwaffe planes too.

Thank you again for your expert opinion.....attached
Targusorul under AAR and under VVS

Spitfires on Targsorul airfield. ohmy.gif I didn't know that.
I have a friend in Ploesti who had some parts of a Yak 1 (found near Targsor ) but I didn't realize that also Spitfires were used on the same field.

Yes indeed. I was in contact with one of the pilots of 83 GIAP
during his life time who used to lead that group from Targusorul
and they also had some P-39's based in there and under the
same group.

By now and thanks to your help I am certain that they were working
on the "Mickey" BF-110 depicted on my photo at Targusorul

With this occassion I wanted to ask you on regarding two
subjects .

1. Does the Rumanian Navy (Marina Militara) have a museum
in Constanza as some historians from Russia talking about
some personal belongings of A-20's airmen shot down at Constanza
on Sept 28,43 items claimed as exhibited in there.

2. Is there a possibility to obtain a grave photo of Soviet
Colonel , Group Ldr flying an A-20 shot down near Bogdanesti
in 1944 ( I have the details )....I know you live in Bucharest
and miles away from Bogdanesti...but perhaps you can help
anyways.

I am neither a Naval fan however naval aviation activities of the
Soviets against Constanza, Tulcea , Ploesti and Galazi in 1941
43 and 44 are well within my research area.....and at the Constanza
museum there is very much about it. I am certain you know that
Soviet Navy bombed at least 12 times Ploesti , VVS 6 times etc etc

Thanks anyways regarding Bogdanesti

Beside Spitfire and P -39, also P-40 N ( at least one) was used by 83 GIAP. From your picture ( Targsor)

I noticed that "A" also painted on the nose of some Ju-88's special equipped with radar: night fighter for Luftwaffe. Because the only Ju-88's with "A" on nose were those with radar detection, it has to be related with that.

-Va rog traduceti in engleza.

Documents in the Military Archives mention that only one Bf-110 was surrendered to the Russians and that the aircraft was former Luftwaffe.
Bf-110F4 Werk Nr. 2662 series EW was surrendered to the Russians on teh Otopeni airfield.
The aircraft had been received together with another 8 on 4 February 1944 from teh Germans through the "Clodius-Antonescu Protocol".
Only the first 12 Bf-110 bought from teh Germans in 1943 were painted with Romanian colors and as some of these aircraft were lost, they were immediately replaced by teh Germans with their own aircraft.

Bf 110 F-4 : the first real night fighter (specially designed for this usage, with a crew of 3).
Not surprisingly, the Soviets could not resist looking into it.
